Riverhounds Announce Stadium Plans

Soccer-specific $7.5 million stadium opening this summer

TAMPA, Fla. – The Pittsburgh Riverhounds of USL PRO announced today they will join forces with Highmark and West Penn Allegheny Health System to play a key role in the construction of a $7.5 million stadium to serve as a home field for the franchise. The stadium will be constructed in Station Square, Pittsburgh’s preeminent mixed-use entertainment complex, with a completion date set for summer 2012.

“This announcement is an exciting development for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and was made possible through a great deal of hard work by David Wilke, Jason Kutney and the rest of the Riverhounds organization,” USL CEO Alec Papadakis said. “Teams playing in soccer-specific stadiums remains a critical component of the USL PRO business model. With Pittsburgh joining the Charleston Battery and Rochester Rhinos in this area and other USL PRO clubs making significant progress on venue initiatives, we are well on our way to our goal of seeing all USL PRO teams playing in soccer-specific stadiums in the next 3-5 years.

“We will also continue to target expansion markets with soccer-specific stadium prospects.”The stadium will operate year-round and host games and tournaments in soccer, football, lacrosse, rugby, and softball for youth, high school, college and pro teams, but will only have permanent field markings for soccer. It will also maintain the location as an outdoor venue for concerts and community events to replace an outdoor amphitheater that has operated on the site for years.

Management of the stadium expects the facility to be a unique addition to the thriving sports venues currently established in Pittsburgh.

“Pittsburgh has a rich history in soccer that is oftentimes overlooked due to the lack of quality soccer facilities in the area and also the established market for American football in this City,” said Jason Kutney, part owner and member of the Riverhounds team. “This stadium creates a foundation upon which we plan to build a professional soccer culture in America’s most passionate sports city, and the Riverhounds organization is 100 percent committed to this mission.”

The stadium will seat approximately 3,500 individuals on the south and east sides of the field. The north side of the field will remain open to the bike trail running parallel to the river as well as the City, which will create a breathtaking backdrop for the main event.

“In terms of a location, we have been fortunate enough to finalize a deal that provides our stadium spectators with the very best views of downtown Pittsburgh,” said Kutney. “Mixed with an intimate seating arrangement that keeps the fans within an arm’s reach of players, this view, and the amenities of Station Square, will provide a stadium experience that is second-to-none.”

On the west end of the field, a three-level building will operate as the main entrance to the stadium. Visitor amenities such as the ticket box office, a fan store, and bar/grille will occupy the first level of the building. Team locker rooms and a glass enclosed training room will also be located on this level, allowing for fans to interact with players before the games.

Sixteen (16) corporate suites will be located on the second level with seating for approximately 12 guests in each suite. A private concession area will be located on this level, providing an elaborate menu exclusive to guests of the suites. A stadium conference center will be located on the second floor, in the northwest corner of the building. The conference area will be glass enclosed with an outdoor terrace, opening the room up to both the stadium and City views. The third level of the main building is slated to be a rooftop patio open to all guests.

The stadium is a privately funded project by local investors. In addition to the generosity of Highmark and West Penn Allegheny Health System, who will receive naming rights of the stadium, companies such as Trib Total Media, a local news and media company, and #1 Cochran, an automobile dealer, have made tremendous contributions to the project and will each be one of the select few companies whose names will embellish the stadium through sponsorship promotions.

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds, a member of the United Soccer Leagues since 1999, have played in a variety of venues since their inaugural season, including three high school athletic stadiums and a minor league baseball facility. The Riverhounds have been competing at Chartiers Valley High School Stadium since current ownership took control of the franchise in 2007. The Riverhounds plan to continue competing at Chartiers Valley until the stadium is open and operational.

The Riverhounds Academy, the Club’s highly successful youth training component, will utilize the stadium for a multitude of events, including training programs, friendly exhibitions, showcase combines, and tournaments. The Academy, with an enrollment of over 550 of the most talented youth soccer players in Western Pa, operates to advance the technical and tactical competence of local players so as to promote these individuals to their highest achievable levels in the game.

“Undoubtedly, we hope to mature many of our youth players to the professional level,” said Justin Evans, Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds First Team, “and that begins with creating the proper environment. Mixed with our indoor turf fields and state-of-the-art strength and conditioning facility, this stadium completes the environment from a facilities standpoint. Youth players and Pro Players alike will enjoy top notch resources in Pittsburgh.”

It Was the Best of Times, It Was the Worst of Times...

I really cannot put into words what happened last night at the Valley, but it has inspired me to do something I haven't done in months. Blog.

We went from such a depressing low to such a euphoric high in a span of 20 minutes.

Make no mistake about it, this team and this club were struggling badly against a side who were up to the task but punching 2 divisions above their weight.

At one point, we just couldn't muster the energy to sing anything anymore. Our club was losing on the pitch and we were losing in the stands to a motley collection of travelling supporters. We had planned to climb the stands, face the parking lot and chant, "We're gonna jump, we're gonna jump".

I kind of forget what happened, but there was a slight spark. We really started getting back into it and maybe the team responded, I am, not sure. Then the Yeisley goal. Hope? No. It was the beginning of something that we all felt before it happened. We were waiting, expecting, not hoping. Then Lundberg. Then the handball. Then the free kick. Then Tommy. Then Deighton.

I was completely spent after that game, slumping on the bar stool at Damon's watching the US win an uninspired game vs Guadeloupe. I couldn't sleep last night, I just kind of laid there, head pounding, heart beating loudly, slipping in an out of twilight. I still have a headache today and my voice is gone. This is probably the closest I'll get to being in the middle of a real football atmosphere. I love it.

Riverhounds Pound Cal, Continue Perfect Preseason

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds traveled to California University last night for a preseason friendly. The Hounds dominated the game, winning 5 nil. This brings the preseason totals to a staggering 4-0 with 12 goals scored and none conceded. Reigning rookie of the Year Jeremy Deighton led the way with a brace before limping off with an ankle injury late in the second half. The Hounds midfielders controlled play throughout a physical match. Other goals were scored by CB Kyle Veris and rookies Neil Shaffer and Matt Fondy. Keepers Hunter Gilstrap and Derek Yobbi shared the clean sheet.

The boys will finish up their preseason this Wednesday evening (7pm @ CMU) competing in a three team round robin with Duqensne and CMU.

Worst Case Scenario

On paper, a 1-1 draw with Argentina looks like a great result, complete with a goal from newly crowned savior Juan Agudelo. In reality, the game highlighted the gross deficiencies along the US back line and our inability to control play throughout the midfield. Argentina dominated possession and generated countless scoring opportunities. Granted, that attack was led by arguably the best player in the world, but the US defenders had absolutely no answers. Dropping more players into the defensive 3rd only seemed to create additional pockets of space for Lionel Messi and company to exploit. If it weren't for the heroics of US keeper Tim Howard, we could have easily been witness to a 4 or 5 nil drubbing. As it turns out, Howard made several fantastic saves to keep the US within striking distance. We did play a better 2nd half, which saw previously mentioned young-gun Agudelo convert a poorly played rebound off a set piece. However, the US still had problems creating offense and holding possession, especially in the middle of the park. The headlines read 1-1, but I see a scoreline that masks a terrible performance and possibly a step in the wrong direction.

it's interesting...on the prospects of Chad Ochocinco wanting to play soccer

After his stint in KC has ended (which it will by all account next Monday), will he have even MORE of a passion to succeed in this sport? If so, would he be willing to trial at a USL level club? Imagine what signing this guy would do, not only for a club, but for the USL as a whole, just in terms of exposure.

Imagine the buzz, both positive and negative, if the Hounds were to offer him a trial that he accepted. Now imagine that he makes the squad. Imagine how many more people would come to games. Imagine the coverage the Hounds would get from the local media. This would be a HUGE story in the middle of Pirates season (gag) that people would latch on to. CVHS would, without a doubt, sell out.

Big, big momentum as a franchise moving into what could be the biggest year of their existence.

If I worked in Hounds FO, I'd at least make an inquiry to see if there was any mutual interest.

PITTSBURGH RIVERHOUNDS

2010 Season: Semifinals, USL-2

The Lowdown – After a preceding pair of disappointing seasons that saw them miss the playoffs, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds appeared to lay the foundation for a strong run of success in the 2010 USL-2 season. Making the playoffs for the first time since 2006, the Riverhounds were led by a strong defense and an impressive home record that saw them lose only twice in the league at Chartiers Valley Stadium.

Key Departures – The Riverhounds had close to a perfect offseason, keeping the core of their squad together. According to Coach Justin Evans, no player of major significance has moved on, giving the club a chance to build on the success it found a season ago.

Key Returnees – At the center of that group is the defensive duo of 2010 USL-2 Goalkeeper of the Year Hunter Gilstrap and 2010 USL-2 Defender of the Year Shintaro Harada. After giving up 20 goals in 20 games a season ago, the Riverhounds could have the ability to lower that figure to less than a goal a game this season.

Key Additions – The signing of Thabiso “Boyzzz” Khumalo is likely to add some additional scoring punch for the Riverhounds, and Khumalo could form a strong partnership with 2010 USL-2 Rookie of the Year Jeremy Deighton, who scored five goals in 13 games a season ago. Khumalo’s experience with D.C. United should pay dividends for the Riverhounds.

The Coach’s Opinion – “We are out to win the championship every single year. We are very hopeful that we have done enough in the off season to prepare ourselves to win the championship, as I expect so are the other teams at this point. It is going to be an exciting USL PRO summer of soccer.” – Justin Evans

If it all goes to plan – The Riverhounds certainly appear to be if not the favorite to win the National Division then certainly the co-favorite alongside the Rochester Rhinos. Pittsburgh does have a tricky start to the season with four of its first five games on the road, including a tasty rematch of last season’s USL-2 semifinal against Richmond to open, but if it can get through that passage in good shape a division title could be there for the taking.

Those of You Standing on the Back Line, Please Take a Step Forward...

This summer the USMNT will once again compete in a Gold Cup tournament that has real importance. The winning nation will qualify for the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil. It's important that we qualify, as evidenced by the momentum we built in 2009 by shocking the globe and ending Spain's 15 match unbeaten streak before giving Brazil a scare in the final. The Confederations Cup in 2013 will serve as a springboard for the 2014 World Cup, much like it did last summer in South Africa.

Okay, as someone, somewhere once stated...cups are cups. A bit confusing, all of this? It's okay. All I am trying to get across is that the upcoming friendly this weekend vs Argentina is actually an important game for our boys. We need to find out which guys we're going to be able to rely on to win the upcoming Gold Cup, which will lead us into the Confederations Cup and on to the World Cup...phew.

The good news: we're returning most of the core team that reached the knockout stages in South Africa.

The bad news: we've still got glaring holes on a back line that has got to be the weakest we've fielded in a decade. Where oh where have you gone, Eddie Pope?

It's been a little over one full cycle since manager Bob Bradley took control of the squad and we're no closer to being able to rely on anyone at center or left back. Let's take a look at who Mr. Bradley has called up for this important contest:

Oguchi Onyewu - the great american dope. Major disappointment who's regressed over the past 4 years. Terrible in the world cup. Possibly the weakest muscular person on the planet. Absolutely no composure on the ball.

Carlos Bocanegra - old and slow....probably our best CB who happens to play LB because we're even worse at that position. I actually like Bocs, and he'll probably captain our side, but he is what he is: all heart, short on skill.

Jonathan Bornstein - please don't get me started. This is a waste of a cap. This guy is not going to get any better and plays terrible in pressure situations. I guess we need someone at LB, but this stiff is nowhere close to international caliber.

Steve Cherundolo - decent player. He plays RB. Our only "deep" position on the back line. He's marginally better than Spector, but not as good as Hejduk in his prime.

Jay DeMerit - undersized and getting older. Had a good run with Watford but it seems like he missed his international window. Might have been our best CB in last year's World Cup yet still made major mistakes that lead to goals. Playing for expansion Vancouver cannot be that great for his game either, can it?

Jonathan Spector - Not a bad RB moving forward but not a great defender. He's got decent pace and can cross. Guess what? West Ham found out that this guy is really a midfielder. Mr. Bradley, please take note.

Timothy Chandler, Tim Ream and Zak Whitbread - newbies hoping to fill those holes. Someone better step up, because right now it looks like our best option at LB is a CB and our best option at CB is midfielder Marice Edu!

So what do I want out of this friendly? I want to see us defend, period. I don't care if we score, I want us to defend against the incredible, all out attack that is Argentina football. This game is going to tell me a lot about who we've called up and give us a hint as to who Bradley has confidence in. I'm not that excited about the prospects of sticking with a Cherundolo - DeMerit - Gooch - Bocs back line throughout the Gold Cup.

To me, it's important that we develop a new crop of defenders that will mature by 2014. I am a bit disappointed that emerging LA Galaxy CB Omar Gonzalez was snubbed. The kid has the size and athleticism that we need at the international level. We absolutely must find out if he can play or if he's Gooch part II. Out of the crop we've capped for this weekend, I am most anticipating Tim Ream. He's a big guy who everyone says is tactically aware (not a dumb ass) and passes well. I don't care about his passing skills, I want to see him play a classic CB role and clear the box!

So in closing, someone, please, take a step forward and be counted!

My prediction: United States 0 - 2 Argentina

Army Dispatch: Quick and Dirty Recap - Hounds @ RMU

Well, not much to report I am afraid...the match was kind of sloppy. The Hounds didn't do too much in the first half and guys look tired, probably from training so hard over the first four days of camp! It's a bit insane to think that they've only been in camp for 4 days and have had 2 games, but they're up against the start of the season and need to get into game shape fast...

1st half lineup looked like this (classic 4-4-2)
GK - Hunter
RB - Seth
CB - Rolko
CB - Veris
LB - Flunder
RM - Gray
CM - Shin
CM - Shaffer
LM - Tuttle
RF - Severs
LF - Boyzzz

Seth played decent at RB, I've underestimated the kid. He looked smooth and composed but had a few vision problems missing Tommy's runs, instead looking to go across the pitch to Tuttle. Neil Shaffer played the entire game at CM. Shin was a beast as usual, but he and Neil didn't have much chemistry which is understandable. I thought that Neil got better and better as the game progressed. Tommy Gray made a few nice runs through the RMU defenders in the 1st half, only to see that final ball fail. Boyzzz and Severs didn't do too much up top in the 1st half aside from a nice volley that Boyzzz almost scored on (keeper made a great save). Tuttle and Boyzzz were closer to being on the same page as opposed to Sunday vs Pitt. Rolko and Veris were solid. Flunder looks a bit slow and out of shape at this point but I am not worried. He was strong down the left flank last season.

We attacked more in the 2nd half and had some quality chances. Deighton continues to be our biggest threat so far in the pre-season. He came on with another new forward who we couldn't identify, might have been the new kid from FCD. Regardless, those two played well off each other and created more than the guys in the 1st half. Horner came on for Shin in the 2nd half and did okay. Shaffer took more control of the midfield in the 2nd half which was nice to see. Niko came on to play CB and Shin dropped back as his partner. There was a young kid playing LW who looked a bit tentative, he didn't do much. On the RW we had a fast kid who I didn't recognize. He had pace and made a few nice plays.

I left a bit early, at that point it was still nil to nil. Not sure how it ended up. I'll update the score as soon as I get the official word.

Update - Apparently we scored late and won the game 1 to nil. Might have been rookie Matt Fondy credited with the goal. So, the guy playing up top with Deighton must have been Fondy.

Hounds Dip into MLS Pot

As the inaugural USL-PRO season draws near, Pittsburgh Riverhounds manager Justin Evans is doing everything he can to field a competitive side in the vastly improved league.

Last week saw the return of fan favorite Boyzzz Khumalo after a two year stint with DC United. Boyzzz can play forward or wing, has tons of pace and has excelled at this level in the past. His experiences with DC United saw him feature in both MLS and CONCACAF Champions League matches.

Another former MLS player, defender Kyle Veris, looked solid this past Sunday when the Hounds took on the University of Pittsburgh in a preseason friendly. Kyle was selected in the 3rd round of the 2006 MLS SuperDraft by the LA Galaxy. He made 18 league appearances, including 10 starts throughout the 2007 season. After a stint in Norway, Veris featured at USL clubs Puerto Rico and Miami FC over the last few seasons pilling up 38 league appearances. The 6' 4" center back looks to have great composure on the back line and will add a threat on set pieces.

Just today we received news that striker Jason Yeisley has officially signed. Jason spent last year with FC Dallas. He was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft following a stellar senior season at Penn State. He played in 5 contests, all as a sub, logging 39 minutes. The 24 year old Hershey native has good size and will compete for playing time with a talented group of forwards.

The addition of these three players, all of whom have MLS experience, is a step in the right direction for the club. The league is going to be more competitive this season requiring a talented, deep squad if we're to reach post-season play.

Pitt Opens New Complex vs Hounds

PITTSBURGH- The University of Pittsburgh men’s soccer team has announced its 2011 spring schedule. This spring will mark the unveiling of the Petersen Sports Complex, the new state-of-the-art homes for the Panthers' men’s and women’s soccer, baseball and softball teams. The complex is located on 12 acres on Pitt's upper campus.

The Panthers will first see action in the new facility on March 20, against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds with a noon kickoff.

UPDATE - March 22nd, 2011

The Hounds won a mostly uneventful game by the score of 1 to nil. 2010 USL2 Rookie of the Year winner Jeremy Deighton found the back of the net in the 2nd half to give the Hounds a pre-season victory. The new soccer complex was brilliant! Seeing a nice, wide pitch with only soccer lines in this city is always something that puts a smile on my face. There was only one stand with limited seating but plenty of standing room around the near goal and opposite sideline.

Pittsburgh, PA – October 22, 2010- The Pittsburgh Riverhounds are proud to announce their participation in USL PRO for the 2011 Season. United Soccer Leagues will combine teams from the its First and Second Divisions to form USL PRO, the strongest professional soccer league in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean outside of Major League Soccer.

USL PRO will introduce regional divisions through the merger of many storied franchises in the United States and the evolution of new franchises throughout North America. USL is anticipating as many as four regions, comprised of as many as 20 teams, creating highly competitive matches and natural regional rivalries to bolster the league’s allure. Additional franchises participating in USL PRO for the 2011 season will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

“The Riverhounds built an impressive amount of momentum both on and off the field in 2010, and we’re looking forward to them adding to their recent success in USL PRO,” USL President Tim Holt said. “Justin Evans has built a formidable squad that should be a force to contend with in 2011 and beyond.”

USL PRO will feature a Board of Governors responsible for making all major decisions for the league including expansion, competition format and commercial strategy. The U.S. Soccer Federation-affiliated league will benefit from the leadership of the dedicated and experienced professional staff at USL's Tampa headquarters as well as the developmental support of USL's proven and integrated system of leagues.

The Riverhounds are coming off their best season since 2006 by landing a third-place finish in the USL Second Division and a berth into the coveted post season. The Riverhounds were led by first-year Head Coach Justin Evans during the 2010 campaign and matured into the ever present Pittsburgh cliché of a hard-working, blue-collar squad. The Riverhounds owned the stingiest defense in the Second Division and walked away with three post-season awards including Defensive Player of the Year (Shintaro Harada), Goalkeeper of the Year (Hunter Gilstrap), and Rookie of the Year (Jeremy Deighton).

The Riverhounds broke onto the Professional scene in 1999 while participating in USL’s A-League. The inaugural season landed the Riverhounds a conference semi-final berth followed by a quarter-final appearance in 2001. The Riverhounds joined the USL Second Division in 2004, appearing in the semi-finals three out of the next six seasons. In 2006, the Riverhounds were purchased by the Greentree SportsPlex Ownership Group and took a one-year hiatus the following season. Since the change of ownership, the Riverhounds have ascended the USL professional ranks to once again become a contender.

USL-PRO: Impact on the Hounds

It's been a very busy week for USL CEO Alec Papadakis. Owners meetings took place in Tampa and a major announcement was released: Designed to help ensure the long-term stability of professional soccer in North America, United Soccer Leagues announced the merger of its First and Second Divisions into a single league property for 2011 - USL PRO.

I can confirm that the Hounds will indeed take part in the USL-PRO 2011 season. At this time, we're not sure which division we'll compete in, but a good bet is a North Eastern division consisting of teams such as Harrisburg and Rochester. It is possible that we will end up in a Midwest division with Dayton, but that is not likely.

After reading the press release, talking to a few of my contacts and scouring the net, I have come to the conclusion that this is very good news for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds Football Club. The goal of the restructure is to bring long term stability to the league by reducing franchise operation costs and developing regional rivalries.

Playing games within a smaller geographical area will allow the Riverhounds to reduce their travel expenses by a significant amount. More games against neighboring clubs may help draw fans and allow travelling supporters to attend more road contests. If a club such as Cleveland re-emerged, the Hounds would have a natural rivalry to market! There is potential here and as a supporter this is right up my alley.

The inclusion of stable clubs like Rochester and expansion clubs located in larger markets will generate increased league exposure and benefit the smaller clubs. What does this mean? Well, in terms of exposure, we could see the Hounds on Fox Soccer Channel sometime in 2011. In 2010, FSC included a USL Game of the Week and hosted USL Breakaway, a weekly highlight show. Both should continue next season. Also, if the rumors are true and a team in or near New York City begins play in 2011, that would undoubtedly present opportunity. Adding the largest television market in the United States would give the league (and clubs) greater negotiating leverage and additional exposure, which could lead to increased revenue.

Yes, it is still speculation at this point but it's positive and attainable.

After a very successful 2010 campaign under gaffer Justin Evans, the Riverhounds will no doubt carry over their winning attitude, pride and passion to compete in the new league versus potential new clubs. UNLEASH THE HOUNDS!!!

A Cut from Kut

Hey guys...got an email from Jason Kutney today. He asked me to pass this on to the Steel Army and any other supporters who showed up this season to cheer on the boys. 2010 was a fantastic season where we made great strides on and off the pitch. Enjoy!

On behalf of the Riverhounds Pro Team and Front Office, I would like to extend a sincere "thank you" to the Army members who came out to support the Hounds through a crazy ride!

As happens with young, rebuilding teams, it takes time to gel. This was certainly the case with the 2010 Hounds, but thanks to the efforts of Justin, Rotz, and Gene, as a Coaching Staff, we absolutely found the right formula.

It was great to see such a young group of players come to understand the professional game under the direction of the Coaches and the Veteran players. I certainly spent much more time this year explaining life at the pro level to various rookies and I know Salsi, Shintaro, Travis, Pierce, and Hunter did the same. By the middle of the season, a bond formed that would keep us close through the final bus ride.

Obviously we're all disappointed in our match on Saturday. We didn't do enough to win, and Richmond, as a veteran team, took advantage of the situation. But as we reflect on the seaon, we take many positives with us.

Our Pro Team is a winner - its proven now. The heart, the passion, and the skill all combined to land us in a deserved 3rd Place. Our Academy has grown and allowed us to attract and sign the players to reach this level.

That Academy is now considered the top technical training program in Western Pa, and we're very proud of that. We have young stars coming through the pipeline, and its a pleasure to see the support we receive from these families on gameday! The money from all of these programs goes DIRECTLY back into the pro team. Our majority owner is one of the most selfless individuals I have ever met. He supports what we all support - the Club first! We are making headway toward an outdoor complex!

So, 2010 has been a marked improvement. As we look forward to 2011, we will be working hard to improve. We have a long way to go!

Personally, I know there have been ups and downs with the Army support, but I cannot stress enough how much I owe you all for your continued support. I started this and I want to see this through. I want nothing more than to look each and every one of you in the eyes when we cut the tape on a new stadium. I have dealt with a back injury that is certainly something I have to take seriously. I am going for testing very soon and will need to respect the doctor's recommendations. My on-field work will never end until it has to. I love the game and cannot live without it. I hope to play in front of the Army again, and I will work my ass off to make sure I'm fit and ready. As Justin knows, the top 11 play. I fight like everyone else to be in the top 11.

As for the Army, I hope 2011 shows a return of the 12th Man! The return of what all other USL Clubs grew to hate!

Win and We're In

There are a gaggle of complex scenarios that could see the Hounds make or miss the playoffs. The results of this weekend's games should go a long way to settle a few variables. However, there is one simple thing that we can do to secure a spot in the postseason: Win. The Riverhounds host the league leading Battery this Saturday night at 7pm. The front office has asked everyone to wear white to create the Hounds first "white out". The Riverhounds will be honoring their academy kids before the game and holding raffles for prizes throughout the evening. Tickets are only $5 for at the gate!

Game notes: Charleston will be without the league's leading scorer, Lamar Neagle, due to yellow card accumulation. Defenders John Wilson and Colin Falvey should be in the lineup coming off of injuries. Pittsburgh fullback Jason Kutney is nursing back spasms but should feature in Justin Evan's lineup.

Footy Fact: The Hounds have the league's stingiest defense, allowing only 18 goals all season.

At 7:00 PM today, the Hounds square off against the Harrisburg City...I mean...@#$&ty Islanders in the third installment of the cross-state Keystone Derby.

3 Keys to Victory

1. The Hounds need to start out of the gate fast. Away teams are getting too much pressure on Hunter in the Hounds' zone early in home matches. Our boys need to energize the crowd early, and take Harrisburg out of this match in the first half. If T-Mac and company are caught off balance in the first half, it could be a long evening in the Valley.

2. Hunter needs to be money in net. Mr. Gilstrap has been one of the strongest additions to the Hounds this season. He's made some unreal saves at crucial moments. In order to close out these Susquehanna jokes, Hunter is going to have to be lights-out if the Hounds jump up early. A lapse in concentration could make all the difference in this match, as both previous matches have ended in low-scoring draws between the two clubs.

3. The Hounds' offense needs to constantly turn on the fire against the Islanders' D. One of the biggest improvements since the beginning of the season has been the Hounds' attack. Lead by Severs, Deighton, and Tommy Gun, the Hounds' offense has been phenomenal the past few matches. They need to continue to get off quality shots and keep the Islanders' GK on his toes.

This is why the Hounds need to win. A team with this...thing...as their mascot does not deserve to be playing soccer.

Gilstrap, Salsi and Deighton earn Team of the Week Honors

Hunter Gilstrap has been excellent all season. It's really no surprise to see him once again honored on the USL's second division team of the week after posting another shutout vs Real Maryland. Nathan Salsi got the start at his preferred CB position last week with Shintaro out of the lineup and didn't disappoint by playing solid defense and slotting home a corner. Jeremy Deighton had another strong game last week. The kid is really using his size well and scored a fantastic goal. He took a long ball off his chest, shielded his defender and rifled a left-footed volley into the back of the net.

We take on Harrisburg tonight at 7pm. A win pretty much locks up a playoff spot. UNLEASH THE HOUNDS!

What Went Wrong with the City Islanders?

It's been a bit of an up and down year for our neighbors to the east. Off the pitch, they were able to take full control over their stadium and entered into an official partnership with new MLS club Philadelphia. Taking control of the stadium will no doubt increase revenue streams and give them the flexibility to host additional events. The relationship with Philly was supposed to increase Harrisburg's viability and legitimacy and provide them with talent to compete in the USL's second division. However, the realities of whoring themselves out has had a detrimental effect on the team's 2010 campaign.

The City Islanders currently sit in 5th place at 17 points with a minus 8 goal differential. With three games remaining this season (two versus the Riverhounds) they are grasping for breath. A win or tie by the Hounds this Wednesday will eliminate Harrisburg from playoff contention. So where did it all go wrong in a season that should have seen the City Islanders competing for the championship? First off, Hounds' gaffer Justin Evans was able to convince scoring sensation Chad Severs to leave Harrisburg and sign for Pittsburgh. This left a big hole in their lineup that's been tough to fill. Second, the Philadelphia Union hasn't lived up to their end of the bargain in my estimations. Sure, some high-level talent has played a few games in Harrisburg this season, but rotating players into and out of the lineup on a weekly basis keeps a team from gelling into a contender. Also, the timing of a recent friendly between the two sides came at a terrible junction in the season for Harrisburg.

They had just completed a four game unbeaten streak, winning three times for 10 points. On the 21st they traveled down to DC to take on United in the US Open Cup and came away empty. Then, after losing 3-2 at home to Charleston on the 24th, the Islanders hosted the Union on the 27th. Playing their starting XI was a mistake as they dropped their next game at Richmond on the 31st, 2-0. They're a tired and battered squad who could have used an extra few days off instead of worrying about a meaningless game.

Perhaps something good will come of their partnership in the future, and maybe they'll learn from these mistakes for next season, but I for one am glad that the Hounds haven't bent over for an overrated and under-talented MLS club.

"Your Kits Look Like Pee." Hounds Win, 2-0.

After watching the Hounds lose game after game at home in 2009, it's been a breath of fresh air to see the Hounds putting up some quality wins late in the season.

The Hounds got off to a shaky start, with Real Maryland producing a few quality chances in the beginning. Hunter was money in net, turning aside the short-lived Maryland assault in the Hounds zone.

The Hounds quickly took control of the game around the 10th minute, with Weeks and Deighton creating huge opportunities.

Real Maryland had their defensive "stalwart" Gareth Evans anchoring their defense:

Around the 18th minute, Deighton decided to turn Evans into a corner flag, ran right around him, and buried a left-footed volley in the back of the net. GOOOOOAAAAALLLLL 1-0 Hounds.

Tommy Gray, i.e. Tommy Gun, was relentless the entire game:

He peppered Real goal keeper Brian Levey with a ton of quality strikes, keeping Real's defense on their toes. Or standing flat-footed, in the case of Gareth Evans.

To be honest, Levey was probably the only reason Real was able to stay in the game. He came up with several unreal saves and held down the fort pretty well in Real's zone.

The Hounds came out strong in the second half, aggressively creating several opportunities on Real's flank. Flunder had several ambitious runs up the side of the field, and even got off a few good strikes. Despite their constant pressure in Real's zone, the Hounds continually struggled with capitalizing on their corner kicks.

Real began to come back to life.

But Nathan Salsi had other ideas. He was here, he was there, and he had grey hair. GOOOOOAAAAALLLLL in the 69th minute. Hounds up, 2-0.

The second half was not without controversy.

As always, the refs were garbage. Real was chirping in the officials' ears for most of the game. Didn't help them score any goals late in the game, though.

As the refs retrieved boxes of Kleenex to wipe up the tears of the Real coach, they missed Real scrub #21 Alan Sanchez frolicking into the woods.

Before entering the game, Sanchez was caught urinating on a tree behind the CV tennis courts:

Apparently, he also had time to change into baby-blue booty shorts and party socks when this photo was taken.

And no, he did not wash his hands.

Frustrated, embarrassed, and down-trodden, Real tried to stir things up at the end of the game with a good ol' fashioned battle royal in the corner of the Hounds' zone during added time.

Real forward #16 Isreal Sesay started a scuffle with the Hounds' D, but was quickly tossed aside and into the corner flag.

Sesay would have fought back, but Niko swooped in immediately and "regulated."

With Charlotte drawing against Charleston last night, the Hounds' win creates some further separation on the USL-2 table:

Hell, the Hounds even have a shot of catching Richmond and getting home-field advantage for the first round of the playoffs.

The Hounds have their next game at home on Wednesday against the Harrisburg City Islanders. Huge game with huge implications.

Severs in Fine Form

After a bit of a slow start due to a few nagging injuries, striker Chad Severs has been bagging goals for our club, big goals. None have been bigger than the game-winner last weekend in Charlotte. He's third in the league in goals and just may catch defending golden boot winner Matthew Delicate. His recent form has helped propel the Hounds into the 3rd and final playoff spot and earned him USL2 Player of the Week.

United Soccer Leagues announced the USL Second Division Team of the Week today, naming Chad Severs of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds as Player of the Week. Severs scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win against Charlotte last Friday. Severs buried the ball in the net in the 90th minute to secure a huge win for the Riverhounds, moving them into the third and final USL-2 playoff spot.

"The Dutch Lions Football Club, in association with the Dayton Dutch Lions FC, announced earlier today its promotion to the USL-Pro Championship Division (former USL-2) and its development of a USL Women’s League team for the 2011 season.

In its successful first season in existence, the Dayton Dutch Lions PDL team is currently a top of the Great Lakes Division of the Central Conference, which boasts many of the top clubs including the Chicago Fire Premier, Michigan Bucks and Forest City London."

He came in with little public fanfare, save a few dozen die-hard Riverhounds supporters who were happy to see local Pittsburgh native Justin Evans replace Gene Klein as manager. He promised us a winning attitude and accountability on the field, a tough task for a club that missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons. Many were skeptical, and as most of Pittsburgh forgot about soccer for the winter, Evans began to assemble the backbone of the 2010 squad.

In were Chad Severs (F), Travis MacKenzie (M) and Shintaro Harada (CB). Three players with pedigree and experience. Three players who were slated to make an immediate impact. As the season drew closer more pieces were added. Alex Weekes (M/F) was signed and Hunter Gilstrap (GK) joined the squad. Evans was instrumental in recruiting both players to bolster the club. Gilstrap added stability on the goal line while Weekes provided youthful talent. Rookie Jeremy Deighton (F) made the squad after impressing during the pre-season, leading the team in goals. After the season got underway, Justin further adjusted the roster by bringing in Lee Kouadio-Tobey (F) and Matt Tuttle (M). Both players have an attacking flare. Lee brought pace and the ability to run at defenders while Matt provides shiftiness and creativity on the wing. Free-agent additions Sterling Flunder (D) and Lou Rolko (D) were able to wrestle starting spots from fan-favorites Eddie Hayden and Nathan Salsi. Rookie midfielders Adam Gazda and Matt Baker have both provided depth and skill off the bench. In fact, only two members of the 2009 starting XI still hold their spots on the pitch.

The personnel moves and team selection may not have always been popular with fans and supporters, but the results cannot be questioned. The Hounds sit in 3rd place with four games remaining. With three of those at home the Riverhounds control their own post-season fate.

I've heard Evans described as arrogant, abrasive and overly confident. Perhaps that's just what we needed: an arrogant SOB with a blue-collar attitude to come in and not only overhaul the roster, but change the team mentality. The Hounds play with confidence and the belief that they're the better team. It's made the difference between losing a tough road game and salvaging a point. Getting a big home win instead of settling for a draw. Those positive results are pushing the club in the standings and demanding respect off the field.

Just this past week, the Post Gazette ran a decent story on the Hounds and updates from the Charlotte game were aired on local sports radio 93.7 The Fan. When the Riverhounds win, the media cannot ignore the club. Above all else, we love a winning team here in Pittsburgh. Look no further than manager Justin Evans as the primary reason for the Riverhounds recent success.

3 Hounds Earn Team of the Week Honors

In the aftermath of the Riverhounds stunning 3-1 road victory in Richmond, three of the boys were named to the USL2 Team of the Week.

Shintaro Hirada was credited for controlling the midfield with a scrappy performance. Forwards Chad Severs and Lee Kouadio Tobey were both recognized for their up front play. Chad buried a PK and then setup Lee's game winning goal.

Great Time to be a Soccer Fan in Pittsburgh

As a Pittsburgh native and avid sports fan, summers tend to be the proverbial off-season. Normally marked by the end of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, continuing through another disappointing Pirates campaign and ending with Steelers preseason. Most people find the time to take in a few ballgames (for the fireworks and bands), speculate on who the Steelers will play as the third CB in the nickel or work on their golf game. However, there is a niche group of fanatical supporters who absolutely love this time of the year...the soccer fan. This hidden sub-culture is slowly growing and gaining momentum, sprouting up in local pubs, around our very own professional franchise, traveling to other cities to take in games and appearing on grass fields all over Western Pennsylvania.

Let me break down the next few weeks:

Sunday June 6th - The Pittsburgh Riverhounds (our previously mentioned professional franchise) travel south to battle Real Maryland. The Hounds are coming off an impressive road win at Richmond, the defending USL2 Champions. The Hounds are lead by first year manager and local soccer legend Justin Evans.

Friday June 11th - The Hounds travel to Harrisburg to play the City Islanders in the Pennsylvania derby. This will be the first meeting between the two clubs in 2010. Over the winter, the Hounds splashed the cash to sign the Islander's leading scorer, Chad Servers. Those involved don't wish to comment publicly, but bad blood remains. This game will be a war.

Saturday June 12th - Team USA takes on England in World Cup group play. It will be the first game for both teams and their first World Cup meeting since the US upset the juggernaut back in 1950. The 3-Lions look for revenge while the US is out to make a statement.

Sunday June 13th - The Tartan Devils Football Club defends their home turf at 1pm. The living legend, Super Mac, leads the heroes of Piper's Pub who play at Founders field, a beautiful pitch hidden off of SR 910 in Indianola. This is soccer in it's purest form...a bunch of 30+ year old men simply playing for the love of the game.

Tuesday June 15th - The Riverhounds host Detroit United at Chartiers Valley High School in the opening round of the US Open Cup. The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is the oldest sports tournament in the history of the United States. Amateur and professional soccer clubs battle through qualifying rounds and tournament play for the chance to lift the cup. This is a truly unique tournament where the smallest of pub or ethnic teams have the chance to play the biggest MLS clubs.

Friday June 18th - The US national team takes on Slovenia in World Cup group action. A win vs Slovenia could help propel the US into the knockout round.

Alongside these games, Pittsburgh is home to several pickup leagues where both men and women get the chance to pull on some boots and show off their skills. Check out the Pittsburgh Pick-up Soccer Group for times and locations!

Who is Lee Kouadio-Tobey ?

To be honest, we don't know much. I compiled the following from Wiki and a few other web sources. However, check out his highlight video, I feel like it speaks for itself...

Lee was born in the Ivory Coast and moved to the US as a teen. He played collegiately at Vermont where he was honored with striker and rookie of the year during his freshman season. He was recently on trail with the new Minnesota team of the NASL. Lee gained US citizenship in 2009.

Hounds Fall in Carolinas

The Riverhounds lost both games over the weekend, ending their three game unbeaten streak. Despite the loses there were some positives that I'd like to elaborate on a bit. Chad Severs scored his first goal as a member of the club. Chad is a proven scorer in this league, tallying 34 times in four seasons split between Harrisburg and Rochester. We need him to find his form if we're to compete with the better clubs this season. The Hounds also singed play-maker Lee Kouadio, who made his debut this weekend. He's a 22 year old attacking player from the Ivory Coast who can play at both forward and midfield. Lee setup Severs goal in Friday's loss at Charlotte and should help our struggling offense. Lastly, rookie Jeremy Deighton scored his first professional goal vs Charleston.

Looking to settle the score, the Hounds host Charleston this Friday night at Chartiers Valley, 7pm kickoff. The Japan Association of Greater Pittsburgh will be on hand to honor the Hound's Shintaro Hirada. The Steel Army and the Riverhounds also welcome Jeff McIntyre and Erin O'Brien from Ruffneck scarves. Jeff will award the Steel Army Supporters 2009 Player of the Year Award on our behalf. The weather should be fantastic so come on out and support the boys!

Alex Weekes Making Noise

Earlier this year, newly appointed manager Justin Evans went down to the USL combine in Charleston looking for some talent. He came away with a possible gem in Weekes. We've only heard a few things here and there but by all accounts the kid tore up the combine flashing skill as a holding mid. He looked dangerous as a midfielder in the preseason, helping the Riverhounds go undefeated. However, it was his ability to play as a forward that turned heads in 2008 at the collegiate level. In the midst of a goal scoring drought, his coaches played him up front and he never looked back. Despite Alex showcasing his midfield skills early on, and the Hounds mired in a bit of an offensive slump themselves, it looks like Evans may be going back to what's worked in the past. Weekes started at forward alongside sniper Chad Severs this past weekend when the Hounds hosted the Richmond. The game ended in another draw. Tthe Hounds remain undefeated despite looking for their first victory of the 2010 campaign.

I recently caught up with the Hounds' new gaffer, Justin Evans. So far the club hasn't been able to find a win, but they've also conceded just a single goal and haven't lost in three contests! I know that he's got a lot on his plate right now, so I sincerely appreciate the time he took to answer a few questions. Enjoy!

With the 2nd division expanding and the 3rd division (USL2) retracting, what, if anything, has this done to the talent level that you expect to face on the pitch?

I expect that this summer will be the best talent across the board that we have seen in the USL-2 in years! Great time to start your coaching career…when we win the Championship this year that will look favorably on the entire Riverhounds Organization.

Being in a division which features four teams who've had recent success in the USL, what are your expectations for the Hounds in 2010?

I expect us to compete in every game this summer. I will demand that the players come to every training session and improve their game. I expect us to win the USL-2 Championship!

Many MLS teams place a priority on league play over the US Open Cup, often fielding reserve players in the early rounds. With the Cup being a potential pathway to the CONCACAF Champion's League, how much of a priority will the US Open Cup be for the Hounds?

It is massive…as I told the players on the team in our first ever meeting, I don’t want players who want to stay and play in the USL-2…I want players who want to play at the highest level of soccer that they can. As a player you think that you will be able to play forever…I am here to tell you that is not true. So, if we can do well as a team against those higher division teams that will be good for the players on the Hounds.

Last year the Hounds seemed to play a defensive, counter-attacking game. Do you have a favored formation or style that you'd like to employ?

I think that we will have to adopt different formations and styles of play throughout the season. It will be challenging because we will have two games in as many nights on the road with travel in between, we will play on grass fields, turf fields, big fields, small fields…you get the picture.

You seem like a hands-on kind of guy! Being only one year removed from playing, how difficult will it be to manage the team from the touchline as opposed to being on the pitch?

I imagine that it will continue to be hard, as I can no longer directly affect the game with my play, rather now just with substitutions. I will still be running around with the team in practice, and helping individual players with things that I see in their game which may need some help…but I am not getting any younger!

How do you see some of the new acquisitions fitting in with the Hounds, in particular, Severs, Shintaro and Gilstrap?

Chad has been a proven goal scorer in this league for years now and after struggling to score for a couple of years, I think Chad is a very good addition to this year’s squad.

Shintaro is a player that I have played against for the past two years, I did not like playing against him because he is very busy and plays with a good bite. So, I expect the same from him when he dons the Riverhounds logo. I brought him in to fill the role that I played on the team for the past two seasons and I know that he is capable of doing it.

We have lacked a true #1 GK for the past couple of years and that hurt us. Hunter is the man! He trains hard every day and is a true professional.

You seem to have more than a few guys capable of playing in the middle this season. How will that competition help the team as a whole?

I think that competition will breed success in everything that we will do, and I want us to play with fire. So, if guys are competing for their jobs everyday when they show up for training, this will make it a good environment. I have also changed the pay structure of the team for this year…all contracts have a base salary but, have a bonus structure as well which involves being in the game day 18 and the team winning as a whole.

Where do you see the strength of this team? The backline, the midfield, the forwards or between the sticks?

I think that we will be strong all over the field. As I just stated, I think that our strength will have to come from our willingness to compete in every game…because I believe it will be a very tight league.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

I would just like to get my first season as a professional coach under my belt and we can discuss the future in the future. It is an honor to be named Head Coach, but it is also something that I will not take lightly in any area. It is a massive challenge and one that I am very excited to meet head on!

Does it make any difference to the players, both the Hounds and your opponents, to have the support of the Steel Army?

I think that it is huge to have the support of the Steel Army! Others may have their own stadiums and such, but when the Steel Army is drumming and humming their songs and chants, there is nothing like it in this league for sure!! I think that it is a bonus for the Hounds to have THE BEST supporters group in the USL-2. Thanks guys!

Gilstrap and Kutney Honored

Hunter Gilstrap and Jason Kutney were recognized for their heroics during a scoreless draw this past weekend as both players were named to the USL Second Division Team of the Week.

USL2 Week 1 Team Honors

There was a moment in the game at Real Maryland this past weekend that I realized how important the acquisition of Hunter Gilstrap was for this club. There was a cross, there was a shot and there was an unbelievable save. The ensuing scramble saw the rebound pushed wide. The Steel Army collectively let out our breath and I remembered muttering, "last year that's a goal". I had the opportunity to talk to Hunter's dad at halftime and listened to the incredible journey that took him from Cleveland to South Africa and then back to the states in less than a year. Apparently things starting out great, but ended in a nightmarish scenario better suited for a Hollywood screenplay. Long story short, and with a little luck on our end, Hunter ended up with us in Pittsburgh. We were not his first choice, but he's very happy to be here and looking to make a big contribution.

Jason Kutney continues to star for this club, both in the front office and on the pitch. During the contest on Saturday, Jason continually shut down the Monarchs' long-ball and flanking attacks. He also flashed his class by springing forward Chad Severs with a pinpoint pass through the heart of Maryland's defense. In my humble opinion, Kutney is the driving force behind the entire Riverhounds organization. Jason was honored with the Steel Army Supporters 2008 Player of the Year award last season, presented by Ruffneck Scarves.

Win Completes Perfect Preseason

I wasn't able to attend the match, so I've included the official Hounds' press release below. Sounds like the weather affected the pitch and made for an ugly game. I also heard that the Vulcans didn't appreciate the Hounds' ball control, evident by their questionable late challenges, but that I cannot confirm! Also, I could be wrong but it looks like long-shot Jeremy Deighton has now scored in each preseason game...has he done enough to make the club?

Pittsburgh, PA – April 9, 2010

Riverhounds End Pre-Season Undefeated

The Riverhounds traveled to California Pennsylvania to round up their Pre-Season Exhibition matches in preparation for the 2010 season. California University played host to the Hounds on the cold and rainy April evening.

California took the early lead over Pittsburgh in the 11^th minute. A Riverhound clearance was served back into danger by California resulting with the Hounds conceding a set piece for the Vulcans from 25 yards out. The Vulcan strike broke through the Riverhounds wall and past the diving hands of Hunter Gilstrap. The ball rebounded off of the upright to an unmarked Vulcan who passed the ball into the open goal.

The Hounds drew even with the Vulcans five minutes later. Travis MacKenzie played a slotted ball into the Vulcans penalty area and was thought to be cleared by California. The ball landed on Matt Bakers foot on the left side of the box. Baker picked his head up and played a lofted ball over the defense to find Chad Severs sitting alone on the far post. Severs’ first touch saw him cut the ball to his left past the approaching defender and slide a left-footed shot into the back corner of the goal.

Riverhounds veteran Nathan Salsi put the Hounds up 2-1 in the 19^th minute. The Vulcans gave the Hounds their first corner of the match and Salsi took advantage of the opportunity. The initial cross bounced off of three or four players and landed at Salsi’s feet. His composure saw him lift the ball over the diving Vulcan goal keeper to find the back of the net.

Tommy Gray and Jeremy Deighton connected for the Hounds third goal of the half. Ed Hayden, attacking down the left flank served an early diagonal ball over the Vulcan defense to find Gray on the corner of the eighteen. Gray brought the ball out of the air with his chest and chipped it over his marking defender to find Deighton on top of the penalty area. Deighton prepared his body to receive the pass and struck a side-volley into the upper left corner of the goal.

The second half saw limited opportunities from either side. The match ended with the Hounds winning 3-1 over the Vulcans.

The Riverhounds open the 2010 season next Saturday, April 17^th on the road against the Real Maryland. The Home Opener is Sunday, May 2^nd at Chartiers Valley High School with kick-off scheduled for 3:00 PM.

Hounds Trash Slippery Rock, Continue to Roll in 2010

The Riverhounds FC improved their preseason record to 3-0-0 with a convincing win over Slippery Rock University last night. The Hounds have now scored eleven times in three games while conceding a single goal. This is a measured improvement over the 2008 and 2009 preseason contests where the Hounds struggled to find offense. The six to nil drubbing of SRU looks to be a culmination of a new approach taken by the club in 2010.

The Riverhounds took major steps to improve their organization this past off-season by naming Evans gaffer, promoting Gene Klein to Director and adding Meghan Arrico to perform Public Relations duties. John Rotz was also named as an assistant coach, rounding out an impressive staff which also includes football gurus Paul Child and Jeroen Walstra.

After solidifying the front office, attention was focused on improving the on-field performance of a club that missed post-season play for the second straight year in 2009. The Riverhounds made a major splash in 2010 by signing high-scoring forward Chad Severs away from rival Harrisburg City. Following that was the acquisition of Japanese defensive midfield standout Shintaro Harada, who most recently starred for Crystal Palace Baltimore. However, the Hounds were just getting started. Veteran keeper Hunter Gilstrap was brought in along with young, attacking talents Alex Weekes and Matt Baker. Steel Army favorite, Travis MacKenzie, returns to the club where he started his pro career in 2008. There are also a slew of young, hungry players competing for roster spots as we get closer to the April 17th opener at Real Maryland.

The 2010 campaign started with a bang and has been running on all cylinders ever since. Will this momentum carry us to glory? Perhaps...but right now I am enjoying the prospects of a long run in the US Open Cup and post-season play.

The USL also lost some teams in USL-2 this past year. Charleston dropped from USL-1 to USL-2 but that still is only 6 teams active for this season. FIFA normally requires 8 teams to run a league. I am hearing that you are working hard on an expansion of USL-2 (D-3). Can you give us any insights into that and where will these teams be coming from?

HOLT: USL-2 is the only USSF-sanctioned DIII Men’s Professional League and the longest-standing active American professional soccer league. No different than USL-1, the main characteristics for USL-2 include a high level of on-field competition, teams positioned to achieve profitability through the support of the USL office/structure, and a connection with our fans in all markets. Although it typically doesn’t get the same spotlight as USL-1, USL-2 is a very important league within our structure and the one which has the most immediate growth opportunity.

We will be expanding USL-2 to form a Western Conference for 2011, which will be comprised of some current PDL teams and expansion teams. At this base level of professional soccer maintaining regional competition and controlling expenses is imperative so there will not be teams traveling coast-to-coast with any regularity except for the post-season. Most USL-2 teams operate on a low to mid six-figure budget and are heavily reliant on local sponsorship, ticket sales, and camp revenue to cover expenses. The current roster of teams for 2010 includes amongst the best operated organizations in the USL system including the likes of the Charleston Battery, Charlotte Eagles and Richmond Kickers and boasts an average of 12 years of USL pro league participation. We believe that this regional competition format model is ideal for lower division professional soccer and that the next 3-5 years will represent a renaissance period for USL-2.

Salsi in the Top 25

The USL website is running a feature which lists out the top-25 most influential players in the history of the USL's second division. They've named our skipper as the 11th most influential player!

# 11: Nathan Salsi

A veteran of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, Salsi joined the club in its first season in the USL Second Division in 2004 and has been a defensive leader since. He earned All-League honors in his first two campaigns with the team and helped guide the Riverhounds to the regular season title in 2004 with a record of 17-2-1. It appeared his career had come to an end when the club departed the league in 2007, but he signed back on with their return in 2008 and has been a leader the past two years, playing all 40 games. For his five-year career, the dependable back has only missed three regular season matches. He has also chipped in a bit on the offensive end with at least one goal each year for a total of seven.

Hounds Shakeup in 2010 ?

I'm hearing lots of rumors about some changes that could be announced this week by the Pittsburgh Riverhounds Football Club. Given the current strife between USL, NASL and USSF, rumors and speculation are bound to run rampant.

The Hounds did quietly make a few changes to the front office late in 2009. My buddy John "Don't Call me Jeff" Rotz has been promoted to Director of Football. Meghan Arrico has been added to the team on a full time basis as well. She's a marketing major who should be able to help in an area where most USL teams struggle. These two moves alone have shown us that the Hounds are investing in the club's future.

As for this week's major announcement, we're still in the cold...efforts have been made a feelers cast but the Hounds are too tight-lipped (and killing us). We do have some sketchy details about an email sent out this morning that cannot be confirmed. Personally, I am hoping that a new venue for home games will be revealed. A few others in the Steel Army are speculating the signing of a few quality players.

I'm headed to the Greentree Sportsplex tonight for some indoor footy action. I've already warned one member of the front office that I'll be ransacking desks for clues!

Piper's Pub, You Will Never Find a more...

..footy friendly place in Pittsburgh, period. It's the only establishment where you won't get a cross look after professing your love for the beautiful game. This past Monday afternoon, my beloved Newcastle United squad was scheduled to play in Sheffield versus the Blades. So I did what any good fan would do, I skipped work early and headed down to Piper's to catch the game live on Setanta, a soccer channel which is not part of most cable or satellite packages. Well, since Setanta has been struggling financially, they decided to sell the rights to the game and went ahead and broadcast a replay of the Watford game from Saturday. I was not impressed, but was not about to get up and leave having ordered the BLT! You see, Piper's is not only famous for their football friendly atmosphere, but also for their amazing food. Seeing my NUFC kit and looking dismayed, Alex, who I believe is the assistant manager, sprung into action. He checked channels. He made phone calls. He found out that Setanta sold the game to ESPN who was going to broadcast it on ESPN 360, an internet-based streaming sports channel. Tommy, who also works at the Pub, produced a laptop PC, stuck it on our table and pulled up the ESPN 360 broadcast. Amazing. I challenge anyone to tell me anywhere else in Pittsburgh where I could get that kind of service. The guys down at Piper's are great, the food is outstanding and the service is second to none. Newcastle won the road contest 1 to nil off a long-range Ryan Taylor blast, putting us back at the top of the Championship 2pts clear. I cannot thank the guys at Piper's enough for a great afternoon.

Pittsburgh Soccer in the Community

Through soccer I've been fortunate to have met some solid individuals over the past few years. One common thing binds everyone together; our passion for the beautiful game. Not many have shown as much passion as James Meara, co-president of Pittsburgh Soccer in the Community (www.pittsburghsoccer.org/). James and his partner, Mark Taylor, have partnered with several local organizations to bring soccer to over 500 kids who otherwise wouldn't have had the chance to discover the game. Summer and winter camps take kids from neighborhoods such as East Liberty, Homestead and Hazelwood and give them the opportunity to learn and play soccer in a safe and caring environment. However, it doesn't end there. James and Mark then bring in some of Pittsburgh's finest to talk to the kids about life, responsibility and respect. These "lifestyle" sessions are just as important as giving the kids a chance to experience the beautiful game. The program is sponsored and supported by the Mayor's Office, Project Weed and Seed, PNC Bank, UPMC and many other charitable donations. Last summer, the Bayer Foundation teamed up with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds to bring some of James' kids out to a game (www.riverhounds.com/home/361028.html). This past Saturday evening I talked my wife into attending the 5th Annual Fundraiser with me, hosted by the James Gallery located in Pittsburgh's West End. It was a great event with all proceeds going to fund next year's programs and camps. Hearing some of the kid's stories from James and Mark was the highlight of the evening and I was glad to have been able to contribute to such a wonderful cause on behalf of the Steel Army.

Had a chance to rap with my ace Whitehall about the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Outlaws...rather than rehash what he had to say, I asked him to write up a little something for the blog...enjoy!

Hello all you fine Footie fans, my name is Brandon, but you can call me
Whitehall. I am a member of the glorious Steel Army and the leader of the
American Outlaws here in wonderful Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I have the
privilege of getting to share my thoughts with you good people, and today I am gonna tell you all a little story about the birth of the US Supporter's group here in my home town.

"The meaning of footie"
Ya know that feeling of friendship, brotherhood, and camaraderie that you happen to find in life some days? That sense that when you are with these people that you are one of them, and that you are part of a family and that they are the most important people to you at this very moment? To me, that is what it is like to be a member of the Steel Army and the American Outlaws. When I walk down the path past all the other bleachers and end up in our section at CVHS, I know that I am home and that my spot is waiting for me. When I walk into Piper's Pub and take my seat, and people walk up to say hi and talk about the game or to say thank you for inviting them to join the AO the feeling is the same. It is these two families that make soccer so important to me, and these are two groups of people that I will do anything for.

So...you may be asking, why in the heck is he talking about the Steel Army? Shouldn't he be talking about the Outlaws? Well, every journey has to start somewhere and my love of soccer really started when I joined the Steel Army and learned what it is like to be part of a soccer supporters group. As the Steel Army grew we decided to expand our focus and start supporting the USMNT, and thanks to the experiences of one member, we decided to partner with the American Outlaws. I won't bore you with the dramas and insanities of finding a home, (though a few Lavlaughlins might loosen my tongue), but we settled down at Piper's Pub and I can truly say that we are home. Drew takes good care of us, and I will be damn proud when we can present him with the banner of an official American Outlaws chapter.

"Ya, almost at twenty-five, just a few more, just a few more!"
So, to be an official American Outlaws chapter, we needed to acquire a band of brothers at least 25 strong, and I am so proud to say that we have met that mark, and are petitioning for official chapter status with the national organization. Once we get that, we will bet set! Fame, Glory, Free Stuff!!!!!!! And since people have upped the ante by supporting this venture to full status, that means I need to do more on my part. So watch for more fun to come. We are already organizing a road trip to the US vs Costa Rica match on October 14th, looking into chapter specific cups and shirts and other fun stuff, and maybe even an indoor team for the fall season. And this is just what we have accomplished in the first four months... imagine where we could be at the end of the first year!

So....thank ya for a few moments o' your precious time and I hope
to see you and yours at the next meeting of the AO to cheer the US onto
victory!

Formation of a New League?

Rumor has it that the infamous TOA is going to break away from the USL and form a new league in 2010. Montreal, Vancouver, Miami, Minnesota and Carolina will leave the USL and form a new 8 team league with St. Louis, Tampa Bay and former USL franchise Atlanta. If this happens, it will cripple the current USL First Division and potentially suspend play for the 2010 season.

So what can be done? Well, here is my proposed solution to the current dilemma!

First of all, what the league will need after the exodus is stability and improved product to strengthen the USL brand. Improving the product will mean adding better players at higher salaries. To do this, the league will need to cut the costs incurred by its franchises. The league should look to consolidate the remaining USL franchises into a single, regional division. Say goodbye to Bermuda, Western Mass, Portland, Puerto Rico and Austin because of the travel involved (Portland and Puerto Rico could potentially join the MLS). This leaves the USL with the following 10 teams to compete as a single division in 2010:

Cleveland
Rochester
Charleston
Pittsburgh
Harrisburg
Real Maryland
Crystal Palace Baltimore
Charlotte
Wilmington
Richmond

This division is full of natural rivalries and the close proximity would keep travel costs at a minimum. Teams could use that extra cash to strengthen rosters and increase marketing. If the USL is not willing to discuss lowering franchise fees and costs, these 10 teams would be wise to form a new owner-controlled league.

There's Only One Justin Evans!

Justin Evans, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds stellar midfielder, has been named to the United Soccer Leagues Second Division 2009 All-League Team. It is the second consecutive season that Evans, a native of Venetia and a graduate of Peters Township High School has been so recognized. Not only did Evans enjoy another great year on the pitch, he also helped Gene Klein coach the side in his first season as an assistant. Justin was the first player ever signed during the Hounds’ inaugural year (1999). This season, he was joined by Tenywa "T-Bone" Bonseu as the only original Riverhounds on the current roster.

One of the league’s toughest competitors, Evans was second in the USL-2 in fouls in 2009 with 31 in 18-matches. In fact, he was forced to sit out of the Hounds’ season finale due to foul accumulation.

Evans was named to the USL-2’s All-League Second Team for 2008 as well, when he scored four goals and chipped in with 2 assists for a total of 10-points; second only in goals and points to Thabiso "Boyzzz" Khumalo who is now with D.C. United of Major League Soccer. He logged 1,194 minutes in 15 of the Hounds’ 20 regular season games in ’08.

Previously, Justin spent time with the San Jose Earthquakes, Chicago Fire and Dallas Burn all of MLS. Before turning pro, Evans was a standout at Penn State University. After his first stint in Pittsburgh, Justin played in Poland’s First Division. He jumped between MLS, Europe, and the USL’s former A-League (now the USL First Division) spending time with the Riverhounds and the Charleston Battery. Evans also played indoor soccer for Cleveland, and most recently, Kansas City.

Til we Play Cleveland City...No Ney Never, No More...

It appears that the USL1 Shitty Stars are up for sale! According to a source, team executive director Aaron Tredway claims to have held discussions with two prospective buyers. The price tag is estimated to be close to $400,000, including a $75,000 payment due the league. The deadline for USL1 franchises to renew is today, September 1st. If the Cleveland City Stars are unable to find a buyer, they are likely to move back down into the USL's second division for the 2010 season.

Who knows how things are going to shake down with the USL being sold to NuRock and many USL clubs testing the waters...but it looks like the Shitty Stars will once again be playing the Hounds. I am stoked about the possibility!

E-terview: Manager Gene Klein

Recently I sent the gaffer an email asking a few questions, my first ever e-terview...nothing ground breaking, just trying to get a bit of insight on the team and his assessment of the 2009 season. Thanks again Gene!

me: What formation were the Hounds playing for the most part in 2009 and what dictates the decision to play a certain formation?

Klein: Each system was designed to try and fit our personnel. We started with a 4-5-1 that became a 4-1-4-1 once Niko Katic entered the line-up. We then went to a 4-3-3 in an effort to get more numbers in the attack. When Randolf Jerome had to leave because of visa problems, we went to a 4-4-2 because we did not really have anyone to fill Jerome's role. There were often injuries, suspensions or just different players making their way into the line-up, and as a result we had to tweak things to fit what we believed were our best 11 for that day.

me: Are you often forced to switch up the formation and tactics when players pick up injuries or do you try to plug in a player who can fill a specific role?

Klein: We don't like to switch up the formation too much because we want to maintain continuity, so normally we would try to look for someone to [fill] a role. However, as mentioned, that was not always possible, so the system may have changed. The best example of that would've been the last game versus Crystal Palace Baltimore. Due to injuries and three suspensions, we were forced to start with three in the back for the first time all season. Sometimes it was more subtle, maybe just the shape of our midfield.

me: As tough as it is missing out on the playoffs, were you happy with the team's improved record from 2008 to 2009? What enabled the team to play so well away from home this season?

Klein: We still lost ten games and missed the playoffs, so no I was not happy with the results, but I was usually happy with the effort. The league has done a good job insisting team hotels to adhere to late check-out policies. That makes things a little easier as far as getting proper rest and a pre-game meal. I also think the veterans on the team did a great job setting the proper attitude.

me: Moving forward into 2010, who/what do you see as the core strength of the Riverhounds and where could we improve the most on the pitch?

Klein: Strength - We were pleased with our attitude, commitment and focus. We also hope the fans saw we attempted to play good soccer with proper team shape, collective defending and good combination play. Improvement - We need to find players who can finish consistently, as well as breaking down opponents with the dribble. We gave up too many soft goals at the wrong time and they have to be eliminated. We weren't quite dangerous enough to make up for any mistakes.

me: We were very impressed with Randolph Jerome in 2009. What made you pursue him after watching him play for Cleveland in 2008?

Klein: We played Cleveland three times last year and he showed he could play as a target with his back to the goal. We had been looking for a player like that. He was a fine talent and would do whatever was asked of him.

me: How were your assistant coaches able to help throughout the course of the season?

Klein: Justin Evans was great. He was truly a coach on the field. I also enjoyed discussing different options with him and found we were almost always on the same page. His contributions were vital. Paul Child could always give me a honest "outside" prospective. he could sit back and offer unique insights that only come from his 40 years in pro soccer. Jeroen Walstra would ask challenging questions that made you think and provide another view. In the end it was my decision, but everyone had input.

me: Who really stood out this season on the field?

Klein: Justin Evans just made 2nd team all-league, he still commands tremendous respect from the league's coaches.

me: Who was the season's biggest surprise?

Klein: Our rookies, Niko Katic, Tommy Gray and Tony Labudovski, although not a huge surprise because we knew they could play, they still made a significant contribution and we were very happy with their performance and attitude.

me: What, if anything, was this season's biggest disappointment?

Klein: Aside from not making the playoffs, the lack of support from the soccer community. Too many people were more interested in criticizing our short-comings than providing us with some support to try and make pro soccer work in Pittsburgh.

me: In your opinion, what does it mean to the players to have the support of the Steel Army?

Klein: It is so important for the players to know that we have a group of supporters who are with them through thick and thin. it was also great to hear the special cheers for the Justins, Salsis, Haydens, etc. I personally was very gratified to know that the Army recognized that the bulk of our crowd were young children and their families.

me: If you could sign any one player from any USL2 team for next season, who would it be and why?

Klein: Matt Delicate. He is dominant in the air, very effective on the ground and does a great job of bringing other players into the game, not to mention he scored a ton of goals. Unfortunately too many were against the Hounds.

It's been almost 24 hours since the defeat in Azteca and I've had just enough time to simmer down to the point where I can type out a few coherent thoughts.

It's way too easy to blame this one of the poor officiating we're exposed to in the CONCACAF. I'll save that topic for another day! At the same time, it's way too easy to say that we don't have enough world class players after our latest "big game" defeat. It is true that fringe guys like Brian Ching would have trouble cracking Andorra's national team starting XI, but this is a game that we should have won. Many argue that we were simply beaten by a good team in a hostile environment. I'm not buying that one, sorry apologists...

Coach Bob Bradley was completely lost from the time he filled out the lineup card. Starting Ching up front as the target man was questionable. Also, can anyone explain to me why Jonathan Spector was dropped for Steve Churundolo? Spector had been solid on defense and provided us with a spark up the left side in the Confederations Cup. Churundolo struggled in the Gold Cup against inferior competition. Again we played the two-deep or two-in-the-hole system and had no midfield presence with Donovan and Dempsey out wide. We made it way too easy for the Mexicans to control the midfield and dominate possession. Keep in mind, it didn't help that on the odd occasion where Bradley Jr. or Ricardo Clark won a ball they gave it right back. We had absolutely no form as guys ran around trying to keep up with the more creative El Tri attack.

It was only a matter of time until we conceded a goal. You just cannot defend for that long under those conditions and expect to shut down a determined squad. We grew tired and frustrated while the Mexicans gained more and more confidence as the game dragged on. The same thing happened in the second half of both the Gold Cup final and the Confederations Cup final vs. Brazil.

I guess we'll just have to tolerate these tactics through the 2010 World Cup and additional disappointment as it seems his job is secure. Maybe then the USSF will realize that he is just not the guy who's going to take us to the next level. Sigi Schmid anyone?

Hounds 1, Charlotte 3 (Refs 2)

On Saturday evening the Pittsburgh Riverhounds faithful bore witness to something almost never seen in soccer - near simultaneous red cards given to two players on the same team.

Officially USL records the ejection of Niko Katic in the 51st minute and Jason Kutney's in the 52nd minute. That sort of makes sense on paper but certainly not to the 850 who were in attendance.

Niko's straight red came during a shoving match with a Charlotte player. Referee Jon Safar was out of position to see a Charlotte player push into Katic but he was certainly there to see the retaliation. From where I stood Niko's hand went into the Charlotte player's shoulder and slid towards his throat.

Kutney's red came even before play had restarted. During Katic's plee against the red, Kutney had picked up the game ball. Walking away from the point of Katic's foul, Kutney tossed the ball down. Dropped the ball BEHIND him as he walked. As he walked AWAY from the refs.

That's when the red card came.

The ball bounced away from the point of the foul and someone in yellow and black got in the way. (For sake of clarity here ... Charlotte was wearing blue and the Hounds were wearing white.) The linesman's flag got in the way and he signaled the on field ref. The fourth official who saw all this happening said nothing.

Another red card went up and at that moment the Riverhounds' hope of a playoff position was most certainly taken away.

Never one to shy away from responsibility though Kutney has this to say on the matter.

"I made a silly decision to toss the ball out of play so that Charlotte could not have a quick restart. The ball, however, struck the referee's flag, prompting a decision by the center ref. That decision did not go in my favor, as the toss was interpreted as intentional in the direction of the ref.

"I apologize to the fans and to my teammates. It absolutely kills me to sit out a game, given the energy and passion I put into this club. I plan to contest any decision for longer term suspensions."

As a supporter of the team its almost impossible to put into words the frustration of seeing this type of poor refereeing. For years pundits have complained about the skill level of the referees in MLS. Let me just say this - It's worse down here folks. Much much worse.

End Game

This past Saturday the Hounds hosted albino-headed Swineheart and the Charlotte Eagles in a must win contest. It was a dream start for the Hounds when Jeffrey Hughes broke in alone and scored during the first minute of play. The Eagles quickly equalized and then went ahead all before the fifteen minute mark. The Riverhounds pushed ahead creating multiple quality scoring chances but just couldn't find the back of the net. The referees took the game away from the Hounds in the 51st minute after issuing a straight red to midfielder Niko Katic after he had been pulled down by the Eagles Luke Williams. Seconds later, Jason Kutney received a straight red for dissent when assistant referee Brian Miller claimed the ball was "thrown" at his flag. This is the second time this season that the Riverhounds have felt Brian's rage; the first was when we were ripped off in Rochestor during the US Open cup. Down by two men the Hounds pushed forward and created some great chances before Jorge Herra setup Charlotte's third goal, ending our threat and putting the game out of reach.

Even know the scoreline didn't favor Pittsburgh, it was one of the best games we've played at home in two seasons. The offensive attacks were both creative and entertaining. The boys played with heart and determination. Tommy Gray had five good looks on goal and Jeff Hughes again provided multiple, quality crosses. We out shot the Eagles 16-15 and earned seven corners to their five.

This loss officially ends any playoff aspirations. However, with 19 points the boys have already improved over last season's mark and look to add one more to the win column when we host Crystal Palace Baltimore next Saturday night for the season finale.

Showdown in Azteca...Who's King of CONCACAF ?

The United States National team has never won at Estadio Azteca, home of Mexican National team. It's tough to play in front of 105,000 rabid Mexican supporters let alone the high altitude and nasty pollution. Couple that with the 5 to nil drubbing that we suffered in the Gold Cup final and everything points to another win for El Tri. Not so fast...this is a US team coming off a gutsy performance in the Confederations Cup. This is a US team boasting one of the world's best keepers in Tim Howard. This is a US team with speed, fitness and finally, a backbone. Gone are the days when the boys would roll over and die during big competitions. Not this team, not these players. Despite manager Bob Bradley's lack of tactical knowledge, this is a game that we are going to win and win soundly. This is the game that finally defines us as the dominant footballing nation in the region and the final nail in the coffin of a once proud Mexican team that's been in decline for years. Besides exercising the demons in Azteca, this win is one more step forward for a squad that's been gaining some real international respect this season.

Can we make the 2009 Playoffs?

Okay, it's along shot for sure, but here is what needs to go down:

First and foremost, we need all 6 points from our last two games. We're currently sitting on 19 points and that would leave us with 25. That's a big improvement over last season's 18 points!

Real Maryland, 23 pts, can only tie one of their two remaining games. They play at home vs Bermuda and then close out in Wilmington. We need a strong performance from the Pigs! If Real ties both games they also have 25 points.

Crystal Palace, 22 pts, plays at Harrisburg tonight. If they lose or tie and we best them next week, we'll leapfrog them in the standings.

Western Ass, 20 pts, host Harrisburg on Wednesday and close out on the road vs the Eagles. I can see them dropping both, but for us to pass them they can only win one of those games, preferably vs Citah.

We could potentially tie the Eagles with 25 points if we beat them this weekend and then they drop their last game vs Ass (not likely).

As far as tiebreakers in the USL2 go, here are the scenarios concerning the Hounds:

First tiebreaker is league wins. So, we'd own the tiebreaker over the Eagles with 7 wins to their 6. Real could also finish with 7 wins and 25 points. The next tiebreaker would be goal differential. We both sit at -8 so if they tie both and we win both, we trump them. If Crystal Palace end up with 25 points, they'd have an advantage with their -3 goal differential going into the last game of the season vs the Hounds...so, we'd really have to pound them!

Confused yet? It's actually not that difficult. We just worry about ourselves and let the soccer gods sort it all out in the end...

player notes: T-Bone is out with an injury. Sean Bucknor is probable at best. Zewe is nursing a bad ankle as well which could require off-season surgery. Look for Jason Kutney to move from fullback to the wing.

Jerome Heads Home

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds Football Club lost by a score of two to nil to the Wilmington Hammerheads this past Saturday night at the Valley. The Hounds went into the second half trailing by two and were not able to find the back of the net after 90 minutes. Our best scoring chance saw leading scorer Randolph Jerome taken down by the Hammerhead's keeper on a clear break. The referee incorrectly ruled that the keeper played the ball, but it was clear to all 887 people in attendance that Jerome was pulled down while the ball rolled just wide.

Jerome has been the Hounds most consistent and dangerous player in 2009. His six goals and 13 points in 14 games led the Hounds. His speed and power has allowed gaffer Gene Klein (for better or worse) to implement a 4-5-1 formation with Jerome playing as the lone forward. Jerome spent last season with the Cleveland Shitty Stars. When he was signed by the Riverhounds this spring we in the Steel Army were not impressed. In fact, I was flat out opposed to the move and questioned Klein's decision. However, Jerome's strong play and constant hustle won me over quickly. The prophetic phrase 'Jerome is gonna get ya' was chanted by the Steel Army faithful each week.

I would be lying if I wrote that Jerome's departure didn't affect me. I made it a point to find him after the game and asked him about his situation. He informed me that his visa had run out and that he had to leave that same night. I took off my scarf and draped it over his shoulders, thanked him for everything and wished him luck in the future. Teary eyed, he accepted, and thanked the Steel Army for our support. Jerome, you're a class act and will be missed.

It's been a long season full of both good and bad times. We've still got a remote shot at postseason play but without Jerome in the lineup our attack will lack bite. Perhaps we'll finally see Sean Bucknor unleashed against the Eagles next weekend? Maybe the speedy Bill Brindley will factor in? Could Joe Zewe, Jeff Hughes or Tommy Gray move into a forward role with the club? In any event, the games will go on and the Steel Army will be there to support the squad.

Four Points, Nine to Go...

The only thing sweeter than Pioneers coach Leszek Wrona's buttery, bald head was watching Riverhounds winger Jeff Hughes carve up the asses' defense for 87 minutes on Sunday afternoon. In contrast to Friday night's debacle, the Hounds attacked from the opening whistle with Bill Brindley providing a spark in the midfield. It could have easily been two or three nil before center back Nathan Salsi converted an off-balance pass by Jerome in the closing seconds of the first half. Jerome buried two PKs in the second half. The Hounds had something like 17 shots vs only 3 by the Pioneers. It was as lopsided a win as I've seen in two seasons. Jerome had the big day statistically, but Hughes was clearly man of the match and weekend. On Friday night his last minute heroics evened up the score saving us from a total meltdown.

Hopefully this performance will give the lads the shot of confidence they're going to need to run the table from here on out. We've got three games at home and need all nine points plus a little help to make the playoffs.

I'd like to now toss a special shout out to Western Ass' middy Anthony Augustine...hey bitch, I hope that vagina injury you suffered heals up soon ;p

Hounds Tuck-Tail and Return Home

It's been a brutal stretch for Riverhounds supporters. We've taken just 4 of a possible 21 points from our past seven games and slipped into a last place tie with the lowly Bermuda pigs. Frustration and bewilderment oozed from the boys after our latest defeat at Harrisburg Citah. Again we struggled to generate offense with only two serious threats on goal; a missed Jerome header in the first half and a semi-dangerous ball crossed by Hughes in the final minutes. Sure, we've been playing solid defense but isn't that the point of a 4-5-1 formation? Even the lone forward is spending most of the game in his own half playing defense. I had a chance to "talk" to a few Islander players later that evening at a local pub where they admitted that even know it was a 1-nil score they never doubted the outcome. They questioned our tactics and wondered why a certain players didn't push forward. I shouldn't have been too surprised, but to hear these things from our rivals just floored me. I bid those guys good luck, shook the gaffer's hand on a job well done and went on my way.

These past seven games have placed us directly behind the eight-ball. We've got five in a row at the Valley, starting with a Friday/Sunday double vs. Western Ass this weekend. Anything other than two wins will end our playoff hopes and pretty much put an end to the 2009 season. A six point weekend will put us in a position to contend for that final spot based on some other results.

In closing, it's now or never. Please, gaffer, UNLEASH THE HOUNDS !!!

This Is Our Team

Tomorrow we'll be in Harrisburg for what is shaping up as a pivotal game as the Hounds prepare for their season-ending home stand. Things have been bit depressing lately with the lack of on-field results and very little off-field news. I mentioned this to Jason Kutney in an email and got the following from him in return...

To The Army,
Well, here we are. It's July of 2009, and we're in a similar situation as we
were last year.....a few wins out from the playoffs. Our advantage this year is
pretty clear: we have 5 home games in a row to finish the season.
It seems like years since we've played at CV, but we're just 1 game away from
the return.
Thinking back on last season, there was a moment that catapulted us toward
the playoff run - Harrisburg. Of my moments as a pro, I will never forget the
run to the corner, celebrating Justin's goal. I will also never forget the toast
at Molly Brannigans that night. That night made the Riverhounds organization an
organization. Until then, we were just efforts and hope glued together by
financing.
I know as a supporter, the past year and a half have been tough. As a player,
they have been tough. As an owner, they have been tough. As a player/owner who
loves the Army, they have been very tough.
Each day I show up to work, I am faced with a variety of challenges from
financial constraints to planning on how to get out of a high school stadium to
how to properly evolve our youth academy to how to finish all the work in time
to get to practice. Scott Gibson, Justin Evans, and I show up at 8am to start
our work day, then train our youth players each and every day for an average of
4.5 hours, then get back to work, and then leave for our own training. During
that time, I sort out two separate companies, trying to elevate both to new
levels. We shed the tired skin every afternoon in order to perform at training.
As professionals, it is expected that we will perform, no matter what we did
during the rest of the day. And we do so.
We have others working full time jobs, like Nate Salsi and Cody Bragg, who
turn on the jets in the evenings to do the same. We do so as the nucleus of the
team. We do so because we love what the team represents. We do so because of the
Army.
My work will transform over the next few months, as we embark on a mission to
make a significant impact on soccer in western pennsylvania. The love and
respect for all that the Army provides is in that project. There is a brighter
future in that project - hopefully we can all enjoy it together.
But for now, here we are again. It's July 2009 and we're in a similar
situation as we were last year....a few wins out from the playoffs. If there are
7 of you in Harrisburg or 70, you are the Steel Army and we play for you. You
each work and support families and make sacrifices in order to turn on the jets
when supporting us. If we are to move forward into a brighter future, we need
each other. It has to start back up again, in Harrisburg. It is not EPL, it's not
La Liga, it's not MLS, its your team.
Let's get points and pints from here on out!

Hounds Pull One Out of 'Ass

The Riverhounds shut down and shutout Western Ass this past Saturday night on the road. The Hounds now have six road points this season coming off one win and three draws. This is a vast improvement over last season's campaign where we struggled away from home. After this weekend's match up in Edinboro, the Riverhounds head to Bermuda for the double and then travel to Maryland and Harrisburg before hosting the last five contests of 2009 at the Valley. Success on the road will help the squad qualify for postseason play.

We came out strong from the get-go and absolutely took it
to Western Mass from the start. The rain increased as the game went along, but we clearly controlled the possession and attempts at goal. In the first half, we had some nice chances created from the wings (Tommy Gray and myself) and Tony, Justin, and Niko stepped up to join in. Randolphe Jerome played well.

Tommy, Jerome, and I were fouled quite often. All in all, the ref did a good job of keeping the play alive and only calling the definite fouls. The second half saw harder rain and the wet field helped Western Mass a bit, as some of the passes that could've led to opportunities for us were just a bit too fast or skipped over a foot. Sean Cameron stepped on as a sub in the second half, with about 15 mins to go and nearly scored to take the lead.

He made a streaking run and took the ball perfectly from a Tommy
Gray pass and nearly converted, but the keeper came up big. All in all, the weather conditions didn't help, but we should've come away with a win. We played very well, moving the ball much better than last week, but certainly having an opportunity to rest up helped! The lineup for the start of the game was consistent from our recent matches, but T-Bone was not fit to play so Cody Bragg replaced him in the middle next to Salsi and played well.

From the looks of it, we'll never know...

It's no secret that the Hounds have two very explosive forwards in Randolph Jerome and Sean Bucknor. Jerome has been featured a ton so far this season, leading the team with three goals. Bucknor on the other hand has only had one start, on the road in Harrisburg while Jerome recovered from a set of bruised ribs. Will we ever see these two paired up, and if not, why? Down by two goals to Richmond last night, Jerome was subbed for Bucknor in the 78th minute. Sean went on to record a few shots and created some great scoring chances down the stretch. Why couldn't we have pulled a fullback off and kept Jerome in the game? I cannot see any backline in the USL2 being able to stop these two monsters at the same time. Also, the 4-5-1 formation is stifling, but it's also taxing on the lone forward and wingers. These guys had started their third game in six days. Richmond had played on Saturday night in Maryland. We should have utilized our depth and been the more energized team throughout the contest. Make no mistake about it, we dropped three very important points at home which could have vaulted us into 4th place. Instead, we're sitting in 8th wondering if this is the beginning of the end.

We want Bucknor to get a chance alongside of Jerome up top. Please gaffer, UNLEASH THE HOUNDS!!!

Sparse Crowd Takes in Hounds Victory

With the looming threat of thunderstorms, most fans didn't make it out to the Valley last evening as the Riverhounds hosted the Bermuda Hogges (pigs). The brave seven hundred who did make it to the game were rewarded with a passionate and defensively dominating win. It was the 3rd straight game where gaffer Gene Klein unleashed Niko Katic in the 4-5-1 system. He's playing a destroyer-type role in front of an already solid back four making it very difficult for opposing offenses to penetrate. The Hounds generated about a dozen decent scoring chances of their own as Jerome again spearheaded the attack. Wingers Jason Kutney and Tommy Gray, the Jersey Boys, were again dangerous on the wings. Had it not been for some near misses the game could have easily been four or five to nil in our favor. The lone Hounds' goal came off the head of high-flying fullback Eddie Hayden from a Justin Evans corner early in the 2nd half. It was more than enough as Waltman and the Riverhounds' defense repeatedly slammed the door on the pigs.

We host the Kickers this Sunday at 7:05. Join the Army around 3:30pm at the Radisson Greentree for drinks as we get the festivities started proper!

Lamar Hunt US Open Cup # 3

You're not going to read this from the Riverhounds, who I'm sure are trying to stay professional about the result, and you won't here it from the Rhinos who know that their first round victory was tainted. However, you will hear about it here, the truth, the skinny...

In all my years of playing, watching and following sports, that was the worst case of clearly biased officials affecting the outcome of a game.

The Hounds fell to the Rhinos 4-2 in penalty kicks after 120 minutes of complete crap. We took the lead half way through the first on a T-Bone goal. The Hounds continued to dictate the game and deny the Rhinos any space. Justin Evans, Niko Katic and T-Bone Bonseu were solid down the middle in front of keeper Danny Waltman. Jerome was playing alone up top again in the 4-5-1 formation, holding up the ball well and allowing wingers Tommy Gray and Jason Kutney to make runs. Things looked very promising until the 72nd minute... After realizing that Rochester couldn't muster many quality chances, the refs decided to eject T-Bone for an alleged dangerous play. This left the Hounds to defend a one goal lead with ten men. Even the home-grown announce team in Rochester agreed that the call was horrific! Minutes earlier, Kutney was pulled down from behind in the penalty area after being sent in on a pinpoint pass from Jerome. No foul was given. The Riverhounds played with heart and desire as the lead held through 90 minutes. The officials then announced four minutes of added time. Four minutes! Like it was scripted, the Rhinos tied the game off a corner with about thirty seconds to play. The officiating was more than inconsistent, it was criminal.

The Riverhounds had seven cautions to the Rhinos three, including the ejection.

So, I did a little research on the officials, here's the breakdown on those refs:

Jason Krnac, a native of Cleveland Ohio, 35 years old and an official member of the USSF Futsal Assistants
Michael Farmer, Streetsboro Ohio (just outside of Cleveland)
Brian Miller, listed as a resident of "Northern Ohio"

(see a fucking pattern here? well, it gets worse...)

Bill Engel, native of Rochester New York

Well, there you go, three Pittsburgh-hating Cleveland scumbags and a native Rhino. What else could we have expected? It's pure and utter bullshit, end of story.

Busy Week for the Boys

The Riverhounds will play three games over the course of six days this week. The Hounds travel to Rochester on Tuesday to battle the Rhinos in a US Open cup match. We're looking for vengeance in the wake of last season's cup exit. On Thursday evening we host Bermuda. The Hounds look to leapfrog the Hogges (and Western Ass) by taking a full three points in the home contest. This Sunday we'll take on Richmond, who thrashed league leading City over the weekend. Good luck to the boys! This could be a huge week for the squad.

Hounds' Rookies Star in Road Win

We've been calling for Tupi since seeing him kick a few guys during the exhibition season, but Nikola Katic hadn't had a start through the first six games. After taking a beating in Charlotte on Friday, Riverhounds manager Gene Klein gave a few guys the night off in Wilmington. This opened the door for Katic, Tony Labudovski and Tommy Gray to get their first starts of the season. The rookie trio did not disappoint! Labudovski bagged a goal and assisted on another while Tommy added an insurance goal to secure full points. However, it may have been the physical Katic who was most impressive playing center defensive midfield in a 4-5-1 formation.

"He won tackles, headers and moved the ball well," explained midfielder Jason Kutney, "Niko played really well."

The Riverhounds have another weekend off before hosting Bermuda on Thursday, June 11th and then Richmond the following Sunday evening, June 14th.

The Future of PRFC - IMO

With the MLS and USL both recently announcing expansion plans, naturally people have been discussing the possibility of the Riverhounds eventually moving up from the USL’s second division. First of all, in case you’re new to the game in the US, we basically have two separate leagues. Major League Soccer, or MLS, is widely considered the top tier and employs most of the best talent and is home to the biggest clubs. The United Soccer League (USL) could be classified as the second tier of American soccer, but there are no official ties between the two leagues other than the MLS poaching some of the more successful USL clubs. The USL is comprised of two divisions. The First Division has teams from Montreal, Puerto Rico and everywhere else in-between. The Second division is more regional, with teams spread up and down the eastern seaboard. The USL2 was created to give clubs a chance to play high-level, professional soccer while keeping travel costs at a minimum. This is where the Riverhounds are currently competing after returning to league play in 2008…okay now that you have the basics let me give you a brief history lesson.

I haven’t been around long enough, nor do I care to get into the specifics, but the Riverhounds had been in steady decline since their inception in 1999. At the time, they were playing in the A-league, the equivalent of what is now referred to as the USL1. Eight years, four venues and numerous ownership groups later, the team was on life-support and forced to suspend play following the 2006 campaign.

Enter the current ownership group. They put together a business plan and lined up investors. Most of what was done has been kept under lock and key and will continue to be the subject of intense speculation. However, after talking to a few of them (over drinks) about the direction and goals of the club, I have never been more confident that we will one day be watching top-tier soccer in Pittsburgh!

So what makes this version of the Riverhounds any better than those who’ve previously fielded teams? Why do I feel like this franchise is going to grow and become a ‘major’ league attraction in the area?

First, they now have a long-term and seemingly sound business plan. They seem to understand the politics required to move things along and have gone out and put together a group of solid investors at both the local and national level.

Second, they have the passion that will be needed to work the endless hours to see a dream come true.

Third, the Riverhound’s Academy is top notch and attracting some of the best youth talent in the area. More importantly, they concentrate on player development over team success and work with other local youth organizations, not against them. It won’t be too many years until we see some academy players on the pro team, moving to the collegiate level or playing abroad. The academy also gives current pro players the opportunity to work year round, which keeps them employed, happy and in-town.

Last, I truly believe that the elusive stadium will be built. It’s been a topic since 1999. Many groups have tried and failed to secure the land and capital to move forward. As the franchise has been forced to move from venue to venue, they’ve lost both supporters and revenue. Once a new facility is built the club will be able to control ticketing, parking, concessions and tap into other additional revenue streams such as corporate sponsorships and hosting friendlies. The stadium is the key to establish an identity and promote long-term stability and success.

In conclusion, yes, I do believe that the Pittsburgh Riverhounds Football Club can and will continue to build on a solid foundation and eventually move into the upper tiers of American soccer. Until that glorious day when we fill the terraces in the supporter’s section, join me at the Valley to cheer on the lads. Let’s continue to get behind the team and prove to everyone that we will not go down without a fight!

Oh Des Moines, Iowa ...is wonderfull

Friends, most of you have only recently discovered the beauty of the world's game. Whether its the lack of commercials and TV timeouts, passion of the fans, catchy songs, or Phellipe Mexes, you all came to love the spectacle of 22 men chasing a ball around for 90 minutes. After seeing the light you have two thoughts running through your head, “omg Christiano is so cute" or “I should tell my friends about this game and culture". Lets concentrate on the second thought i.e. let us touch on the subject of converting your American buddy to a soccer fan.
I myself have contributed to few people expressing interest in the game and would like to share with you my guide to a successful conversion.

Step 1. Do not be "in your face", avoid phrases such as “Dude, its the greatest game in the world",” It is European and you will be more cultured", " It is so much better than * insert a popular American sport" or " omg Christiano is so cute". Be patient, talk about the game with your friend or coworker, do not overload them with information and with time, that person will begin to show some moderate interest in the game, just to see what you are talking about.

Step 2. Find the common ground between the person in the game. If the person is of European descent you can tell them about the great players and rivalries from the land of his or her ancestors.
Caveat: Be careful here, if that person's name is Mike " Italian last name" and he is 4th generation Italian and the only Italian words Mike knows is marinara sauce and pizza, becomes a fan of Italian National Team....you have FAILED.

Step 3. Invite that person to watch a game with you and explain certain nuances of the game. Don't talk much, just listen and answer any questions that person might have.

Step 4. Do not pressure that person into supporting a particular team...because he or she will end up supporting Sunderland and than switch teams every week...or purchase a velcro wallet. Let the person make his own decision and don't rush into any commitments. Perfect example here, and I am not talking about gay marriage, is Beef and Espo. These two lads followed the game for a year before becoming supporters of West Ham and a certain Coca Cola Championship powerhouse.

After following these steps carefully you will make "that person" a footie fan. If not, well then...let "that person" enjoy four hours of coverage for a 90 second horse race.

Since posting the third installment of the Steel Army Pubcast on early Monday morning I've learned additional information about Stephen Cohen and associates.

The business entity Cohen and Nicholas Geber operate World Soccer Daily from is actually suspended. According to the California Business Portal, as of May 15, 2009 the corporation known as SOCCER WEEKLY, INC. is suspended in the state of California. While the website does not state this, I have been told this is due to tax issues.

When it Rains...

After the presentation of the Steel Army's 2008 Player of the Year award, things turned dismal at the Valley this past Saturday evening. A slow first half ended with the City Islanders taking a one goal lead. At the half, the skies opened up forcing fans into the bowels of the stadium. Sensing the mood and wariness of the drenched populace, the Steel Army began chanting, singing and dancing; transforming the place into a carnival! The fans came out for the second half in good spirits, but the tying goal never materialized as Harrisburg kept up the pressure. The Hounds did not link up well and appeared uninspired for long stretches during the match. Some blame the recent two game slide on tactical changes while others point to a lack of player focus. Personally, I felt like midfielder Justin Evans was receiving the ball too deep in our own end to start the attack, which sputtered before reaching the final third. Whatever the reason, manager Gene Klein will need to find a way to right the ship heading into a two week break from action before the Hounds make the dreaded Charlotte/Wilmington road trip.

Steel Army Pubcast #3 - Ruffneck Scarves

I had the opportunity to sit down with Jeff McIntyre, owner of Ruffneck Scarves, during his recent visit to Pittsburgh. Jeff was in town as part of the 2009 Ruffneck Roadtrip to catch the Riverhounds versus Harrisburg City Islanders match.

Aside from talking about the current state of soccer support in the United States Jeff and I also discussed the controversy surrounding American broadcaster Stephen Cohen. Cohen has again placed blame on Liverpool supporters for the 1989 Hillsborough disaster where 96 of their fellow fans were crushed to death.

As an advertiser on Cohen's radio program Ruffneck Scarves has been caught in the middle of this controversy. During our interview McIntyre discusses his recent talks with Liverpool Supporters Club New York (www.lfcny.org). McIntyre also states for the record his differing stance from Cohen.

City Islanders Scored A 3-0 Win Last Weekend In Harrisburg

Last weekend, the Harrisburg City Islanders jumped on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds early, and came away with a 3-0 win. Saturday night, the Hounds look for some revenge, as they host Harrisburg in a United Soccer Leagues Second Division match at Chartiers Valley Stadium in suburban Pittsburgh. Kickoff time is 7:05 p.m.

The loss last Saturday at the Skyline Sports Complex on City Island in Harrisburg was Pittsburgh’s first defeat of the season. The Riverhounds are now 1-1-2 (5-points). Harrisburg is 2-1-1 (7-points) and in a three-way tie for first place with Wilmington and Crystal Palace Baltimore.

The Hounds paid dearly for a giveaway when the City Islanders converted that turnover into a Chad Severs penalty kick in the 36^th minute. Pittsburgh goalkeeper Zach Varga was red carded going after the ball on the breakaway and the Hounds subsequently played a man down for much of the match.

Severs scored his second goal in the 44^th minute off a cross from Mo Odour.

The City Islanders went up 3-0 when Tivi Shipalane scored in the 59^th minute. Jason Pelletier assisted.

Harrisburg’s Jason Massie was ejected in the 74^th minute, evening the sides, but it was too late for Pittsburgh.

After the match against Harrisburg, Pittsburgh will play back-to-back USL-2 games at Charlotte and Wilmington on May 29^th and 30^th.

What is a football supporter? It’s a question that non-football fans ask me from time to time and it’s difficult to verbalize. I guess the simplest definition that I can give is this: A football supporter is any individual who displays allegiance to a football club. The tricky part is trying to put into words the passion that forges an allegiance and the bond that exists between the individual and the club. It’s more than being a fan or rooting for a favorite player. It’s something deep down that twists and squeezes your insides for 90 minutes during a match. It’s the elation and agony that accompanies a team over the course of a season. It’s the willingness to stand behind a franchise, year after year, regardless of success.

Hounds Steal Another on the Road

Early season success continued this past weekend in Richmond. The Kickers opened up the scoring in the first half to take the lead. Former filthy Cleveland scum forward Randolph Jerome put home a rebound to tie the game at one (with performances like that, and the backing of Super Jason Kutney, we may have to actually give the guy a chance to represent the black and blue).

Chris Riley, doing his best Caugherty impression, drew a straight red after going studs up on a tackle early in the second half. Down a man for 40+ minutes, the Riverhounds were able to stymie the Richmond attack in the sweltering heat. Another gutsy performance on the road and another point towards a playoff birth. COME ON YOU HOUNDS !!!

The PRFC and the Steel Army will 'welcome' the Real Maryland Monarchs to Chartiers Valley next Saturday May 2nd @ 7:05. We'll be meeting at the Radisson Greentree starting around 3pm for drink specials and pregame festivities. Hungry For Success, Hounds Order a Second Helping of T-Bone

He’s played 87 regular season and 11 playoff games in the MLS (Major League Soccer) for Chicago, Columbus, Dallas and New York. He’s made 21 appearances for his native Uganda. But before all that, Tenywa ‘T-Bone’ Bonseu was a Riverhound. Tenywa joins midfielder Justin Evans as the second of the original Hounds to return to Pittsburgh ten years after their inaugural season.

The 6'1, 185-pound Ugandan international, know for his durability and versatility, is back to bolster an improved Hounds squad. T-Bone can deploy as a center-back, right-back or defensive midfielder which should give manager Gene Klein plenty of options. With returning stars Nathan Salsi and Eddie Hayden, along with newcomer Nikola Katic, the Riverhounds will field a group of physically imposing defenders. League forwards take note: the fee to play inside the box will be payable in blood.

Hughes Stays Sharp with Cincinnati 1790

I recently caught up with Steel Army favorite, Jeff Hughes, and asked him about this past offseason…

Jeff kept his skills sharp and fitness level up by playing professionally for Cincinnati 1790, an indoor club that competes in the PASL-Pro league. He bagged 21 goals and added 6 assists in just 15 games. After a very successful expansion season, his club lost in the championship game to Stockport by a score of 13-5. He did score one of his team’s five in the loss, but it was little consolation.

“Indoor was great [because] it helped me get back into form after a not-so-great season last year and improved upon my speed of play and tackling…”

Hughes’ 2008 Riverhounds campaign was interrupted by knee surgery to repair some ligament damage. Although successful, the surgery put him on the sidelines for an extended period of time. He worked hard, stayed fit and was able to make it back on the pitch by the end of season.

This year brings a new challenge as the Hounds look to improve on their 7th place finish, which saw them fall just short of the USL2 playoffs.

In the latest edition of the Riverhounds Academy newsletter part-owner, player and heart of the team Jason Kutney had a few words to say about the number 5,000. Like Jason says in his article, the number five thousand seems so small in comparison to the ridiculously large amounts we hear tossed around carelessly every day on the news but to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and professional soccer in western Pennsylvania the number can be huge!

How many is 5,000?

Numbers these days seem to have lost their value. Gas prices were the thorns in our side just a year ago, when we were struggling to fill up our midsized sedans for less than $55 per tank. Now, the same car is pulling out of the station for less than half the price! Meanwhile, American businesses are singing the blues and looking for bailout money. AIG, Freddie and Fannie, “the big four” – just about everyone is getting in line, looking for their billions of dollars of aid! MSNBC, CNBC, FOX NEWS, and others just wait around to report the Unemployment Rate, almost hoping to see a higher number so they have more to talk about! We, as Americans, see these numbers and just go on about our business as best we can. We pull our resources together and respond. Most Americans have no idea how gas prices are truly swayed, or what over $100,000,000,000 of “help” looks like in strategy, or what the Unemployment Rate means until it hits home. We’re faced with an interesting dilemma these days – numbers have lost their meaning!

But I ask you – how many is 5,000?

In the broad scope of things, 5,000 now seems like a small number. If you won $5,000 in the lottery, you would say “just $5,000” when you told your friends and family. If America only cut 5,000 jobs over the previous 6 months, we would be thrilled. If 5,000 people showed up at Heinz Field to watch the Steelers play on Opening Day 2009, the Rooney Family would panic. However, what if those same 5,000 showed up at Chartiers Valley High School on May 2nd to watch 18 professional soccer player band together, in hopes of representing Pittsburgh? That would be a sellout!

Here we are, just over a month away from that day, and I ask you: how many is 5,000? Is it attainable? Can we pull it off? Can Pittsburgh, one of the nation’s leading sports towns, support professional soccer? All of these questions face us, the Riverhounds, on a daily basis.

And at the end of each day, I sit back and think about the number 5,000…

In our new world of fantasy numbers, remember that 5,000 is real. 5,000 standing to listen to the national anthem; 5,000 hearts beating as the first ball rattles the crossbar; 5,000 coming together to form a family for 90+ minutes; 5,000 steps taken by players playing their hearts out for 5,000 times less than the Steelers, Pirates, and Pens.

5,000 – my dream!

Up the Hounds? I Hope So…

It’s been a rocky preseason for my beloved PRFC. Only able to manage two draws in four games vs. local college teams is like being kicked squaw in the nuts. I’m struggling to find the Salsi-headed lining to this stormy cloud, but it’s becoming increasingly more difficult as the results roll in from GTS09.com (yes, KC gets the scores posted rather quickly).

Could these results be an aberration? I hope so, because it feels like death is looming over the horizon for this coming season! I made it out to the fixture vs. Pitt last week and left asking myself if I’ve gone completely mental these past few years. Yes, there were bright spots: the massive Croatian CB wearing my favorite number (4) kicked someone so hard in the thigh that we could hear the slapping noise up in the stands. SJK (Super Jason Kutney) looked lightning-quick and played several crosses into the area. The only thing Eddie Hayden can do better than pick up women is play ball. Actually, the entire back line looked real good.

Now, let me point out some things that were missing: There was absolutely nothing up top, nobody making runs and very few shots on goal. The trialists just couldn’t link up with Evans and the midfield play was generally sloppy. There were more turnovers than…than…eh, I can’t think of anything clever at the moment. It seems like goals are going to be tough to come by this season. The one guy, Jerome, who has scored a few, is former filthy Cleveland scum. How can I root for a guy who smashed into our keeper to steal points from us last year at the away opener?

At this point, after losing to WVU last night, the only direction is up. Let's hope the gaffer can pull the squad together and figure out the winning formula before next week’s league opener.

The Riverhounds head down route 79 tonight to take on West Virginia University in what is most likely their last major pre-season match before the USL2 season officially gets under way. In 2008 pre-season the Riverhounds beat the Mountaineers 2-1 and hope to repeat this year.

After a snowy 1-nil loss to Slippery Rock University on Monday night the Riverhounds fall to 0-2-1 for their pre-season. (Word is there might have been a win against a U-21 or U-18 side in there but let's not go there.) With Zach Varga (#0) resigned as starting goalkeeper for the Riverhounds, the squad is still trialling several keepers.

From a scoring perspective, Guyana native Randolf Jerome has been the highlight of the pre-season. Jerome (#18) has scored twice for the Riverhounds against both California University and the University of Pittsburgh. Jerome had 13 appearances and 1 goal last season for the Cleveland City Stars (booooo!). And according to Wikipedia, he's made an appearance for the Guyana national team at the age of 21. (We'll get some confirmation there.)

Sometimes to look at the pre-season realistically. Of course we'd love to see the Hounds clean up against every collegiate opponent they take on but when you stop to think the team is fielding and trying out some players just a year out of college themselves its easy to see where the team can founder in these early matches.

The Riverhounds head to Maryland in just eight days to take on the Monarchs. That's when the real action gets under way. Starts as two on the road for the Riverhounds and then we get to welcome them back to Chartiers Valley when the 2009 Hounds take on Crystal Palace Baltimore.

To me, nothing says pre-season Riverhounds soccer than standing around on a cool Pittsburgh evening with a few members of Steel Army and cracking more than a few jokes about the footy on display.

Like the empty glass I left at the Outback, what I saw on the pitch left me wishing for more.

Dawning Of A New Rivalry

As we draw closer to the start of a new season, there has been a shift in the mindset of the Steel Army, less and less focus has been put on Cleveland and more and more on Harrisburg. There are obvious reasons for this, and then there are the not so obvious. First and probobly most blatant is that Clevo will be in a different division of the USL, so the Hounds can only play the "stars" in the US Open Cup or in what would probobly be a very entertaining friendly.

On to the less obvious... First off City Isles fans voiced concerns to thier front office after witnessing our antics in Pittsburgh. The Owner of the HCI then sent us a "warning" advising that we tone it down on our trip to Harrisburg. Now asking us to cool it on the foul language is one thing, and that I fully understand. Telling us that we shouldn't sing negative songs about the opposition however, completely crosses the line. So natuarally H-burg got a healthy dose of "Alabama in the Middle" and "Oh Harrisburg is full of SCUM!!!" T-Mac's upper 90 goal to give the Hounds thier first road win and the Army it's biggest cause for celebration of the season, futher added fuel to the rivalry. All of this combined with a HCI fan base that envies us, hates us, and doesn't understand us, is making Pittsburgh-Harrisburg a rivalry that I'm getting pumped up about. Remember that it was a City Islander Fan that said "support doesn't matter in this country"(-Thanks GA2)

Year in Review Part 2: Exploits of the army.

So as promised I will review the Harrisburg as I remember it. For me it really started with trying to get as many people to take the trip across the state as possible. What at one point looked like an army of 20 or so going to the state capital to watch the hounds take on the City Islanders, dwindled down to around 5 just days before the trip. Keep in mind this was a wednesday night game so work was the main reason many of us couldn't make it, but that isn't an excuse. The Army should always come before work, just ask Keystone. Anyways the 5 grew to about 12 just before the trip and it was exciting to know the army would have a strong voice in Harrisburg.

When game day arrived Myself Yan and Maria make the long car trip to Harrisburg without many bumps along the way. When we arrived at the bar however, it was clear that MJ, Beef Espo and Keystone had wasted no time in starting the pre-game.

After a few drinks the rest of us were just about ready to take over Harrisburg as well. Then in true Steel Army fashion, Tim limps in on crutches just hours after having surgery on his leg. Naturally he is quickly given a seat and a pint, taking his rightful place as a Steel Army Legend.

As we crossed the bridge and made our way to the stadium, I was very impressed with the size of the crowd that was filling into the gates. Although Harrisburg has no orginized support the soccer moms and soccer kids come out in full force. Other stadium highlights have to include; mocking a girl who decided to wear a Leeds United shirt, drinking Troeggs for 3 dollars, and recieving dirty looks from half of Alabama... err I mean Harrisburg. It was during halftime that BEEF and Espo discovered that nobody was stopping them from taking the USL 2 Trophy, which was sitting on the edge of the snack shack.

Thankfully the 'ammer and Magpie in BEEF and Espo didn't get the best of them and the cops were not needed. In the second half we broke out the more offensive songs such as "Oh Harrisburg is full of scum" and "Alabama in the Middle" naturally the locals weren't too happy with us but it was hard to tell as they weren't making any noise. After T-mac's header gave us the win, we stormed the field with Pittsburgh flags and Hound's blue and white, much to the shagrin of Islander fans, especially those who are looking to get some orginized support for the next year.

After the match we went back to the bar and drank with the players, in what I felt was a classy and honest way for them to show us how much they appreciated our support during the season.

Steel Army Year in Review 2008 Part 1.

Since the new year is coming I thought I'd write about some of our favorite moments, trips, games and incidents over the past year. It was a hell of a ride, with alot of highs and a few lows, but the best thing about the Steel army is that we will be back and bigger and stronger next year. Allez Les Hounds!!!!!!

Best Photo: My favorite photo of the year would have to be BEEF hoisting the trophy in Harrisburg. I mean shouldn't they have kept it alittle more safe than just leaving it unattended on the consessions stand so that any ole hooligan (Beef and Espo) could come by and snatch it?

Best On Field Moment: This is a no brainer it has to be T-mac's Game winning header on the road against the defending champion Harrisburg City Islanders. It gave the Hounds thier first road win in exciting fasion and it gave the Steel Army an excuse to go out and drink with the players.

Best Song: In my opinion song that still echoes through the terraces and the minds of the Steel army would have to be "Shosholoza" For those of you who arent familiar with the song or the Steel Army there is a little bit of a story behind this one. One of the Founding members of the army, a man I will simply refer to as MJ, decided to email a friend of "Boyzzz" (one of our standout players) in the e-mail he asked if there were any specific songs that we should learn as a tribute to Boyzzz. "Shosholoza" a song of national pride in Boyzzz's naitive South Africa was suggested. After a few days practicing and some grumbling on the boards the song was finally debuted. African players on visiting teams whould look back to the Steel Army in suprise to hear the song. One singing of the song even recieved a roaring ovation from the rest of the Riverhound's crowd who at times during the year had been at odds with the army. As for Boyzzz his season and his career never looked back as he whould collect multiple league honors on his way to signing a loan contract with MLS side DC United.

Say Goodbye to The City Stars.

Today it was announced that the Cleveland City stars would be promoting to the USL1. In the Hound's first year back the City Stars were clearly our biggest rival, they have a supporters group about the size of the Steel Army, they were our closest road trip, and they are from CLEVELAND! It was a natural fit, but so it ends after only one year. Cleveland clearly got the best of it on the field taking all 9 points partly due to a heart breaking last second goal in the opener. In the stands however I would say that there were no losers as I'm sure the Green Army enjoyed the back and forth road trips as much as we did. Probobly a bit more given the results. That said I don't know what upsets me more, The fact that we lost everyones favorite rivalry, the fact that it's one less road trip for next year, or the fact that the Steel Army is now the only supporters group in the northern part of the USL. Hopefully Harrisburg can get thier act together and get some real support, although signs look promising that that the two maryland clubs may have some orginized support next year.
As for the Green Army I don't know what I'd think if I were them, on one hand you get to go into a bigger and better league, and you will get to see a few away games on national TV, (ahem FSC) also you'd get a few more home games, but on the downside the only away game that is a drivable distance is Rochester, rather than having half the league within distance of a day trip as you do with the USL2. Also keep in mind that the majority of the Green Army's support is college or High School age, so Portland and Miami are most likely out of the question. On top of that I'm sure a few of the Green Army Bhoys will miss the banter and back and forth chanting that the rivalry created.
Speaking of missing rivalries it's unfortunate that the biggest supporters group rivalries in both the USL1 and USL2 will dissappear in the same season, as Seattle becomes part of the MLS leaving the 'ole Portland Timbers behind, Cleveland Pittsburgh had that honor in USL2 (DUH!!!) So where does this leave the USL2? It looks like the USL2 will go from being a 10 team league to a 9 team league with rumors of Indy joining the league sometime in the future to again push it to ten. The rivalry based scheduling from last season will have to be adjusted, also every American team in the league will qualify automatically for the US Open Cup. (If you remember the Hounds just made the tournament last year by avoiding a last place standing on the arbitrary day that the qualifying was to end.) If the Indianapolis rumors are true then the league will have ten teams again soon, but before you get too excited there were rumors of a canadian team in the USL2 a few months ago and I haven't heard anything of that since. If your a fan of the City stars I suppose it's a good day, if your a fan of the rivalry it's a sad one, and as for the Steel Army we still hate Cleveland City which is about the highest honor that we can bestow on another team.

Harrisburg Comes to the Valley

In what is to be a crucial game for both The Hounds and the Islanders, both teams will have more to worry about than just their opponents. Isolated thunderstorms are expected for Bridgeville starting at around 2 PM and continuing for the rest of the day. That means players fans and even reporters are going to have to adjust to the weather conditions, at Chartiers Valley Stadium. Of course the crowd will be a big obstacle for the visiting Islanders as well. Non stop noise is expected from the entire stadium but it has been especially loud behind the visiting bench. The Hounds will have to concentrate on the game itself despite needing a win from Wilmington over Western Mass, to stay within striking distance of the 6th and final playoff spot. Normally Harrisburg would be seen as heavy favorites coming into a match like this, the City Islanders have a firm hold on a playoff spot, are the defending champions and sit 11 points above the Riverhounds. Recent form however suggests otherwise, The Hounds are riding a 3 match home winning streak, and Boyzzz (3 goals in his last two games, as well as USL 2 player of the week) looks to be in top form. Then theres the Islanders who have jumped out to leads in each of their last two matches, only to see those leads slip away and result in just one point. The lose to Crystal Palace USA was especially heart breaking for Harrisburg as the Islanders not only held the lead just 6 minutes in but even after Palace equalized City would have one and two man advantages for the final 54 minues of the game. That advantage still wasn't enoguh to prevent a goal from giving the 9 man Palace side all three points. If the Hounds are to win they must slow down Harrisburg MF Mo Oduor who has been one of the few bright spots in the City lineup. Mo had 1 goal and one assist in Harrisburg's 2-2 draw with Western Mass this past Saturday. With niether team being able to settle for a point this should be a wide open and exciting game, hopefully the Hounds will come out on top. Kickoff is 7:05 Saturday and as always the best seats in the house will go unused as the Steel Army will be standing once again.

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds have seen a sudden swing of fortunes with 3 dramatic wins at home! Riverhounds' foward Boyzzz Khumalo finds himself as Man-of-the-Weekend after tallying 3 goals in two days.

It was all about Boyzzz on Saturday evening when the South African forward put two into the net against the visiting Bermuda Hogges. The night ended with a clean sheet for Riverhounds keeper Zach Varga while Boyzzz tallied the points for the Hounds' second win of the season.

Hitting the field again just 24 hours later, Riverhounds midfielder Jason Kutney put one into the Crystal Palace net in the waining moments of the first half. Fellow midfielder Travis Mackenzie got the assist.

The visiting Crystal Palace Baltimore supporters finally got something to cheer about in the 72nd minute when Palace drew even with the Hounds. Their celebration was extremely short lived when Boyzzz scored unassisted as the clock ticked into the 73rd minute. Thanks to some diving saves from Hounds keeper Andy Keszler, the team was able to stay on top and brought home 6 much-needed points for the weekend!

Match Report: Hounds Drop Another on the Road

The misery continues for the Hounds and their supporters. Another game, more squandered opportunities and another red card. The Riverhounds FC dropped a 3-1 contest to the Richmond Kickers this past Saturday in front of 2,487 fans at the University of Richmond.

According to one Richmond supporter, the Hounds "showed up" to play this game; taking early control and out-shooting the Kickers 8-4 in the first half. Boyzzz Khumalo was again a stud on the pitch, hitting the post in the first half and then scoring to tie the game early in the second.

The Kickers were awarded a PK in the second half and converted to take a 2-1 lead. They added a late goal after Travis MacKenzie was sent off with a straight red after an apparent foul away from the play.

Riverhounds FC Bags First League Victory...Travel to Richmond

It took some time, but the Hounds were finally able to break a tough winless streak and get a victory last Saturday against Western Mass. The game was a totally domination; the only aspect where the Hounds did not excel was putting the ball in the net. 22 shots on goal resulted in only 2 goals with about 10 that went just wide or just over the crossbar. The game could have easily ended with 7 or 8 tallies. Alas, we had to settle for a beautiful Jean Jerome header off a cross and another PK from Justin Evans. There were a few 'fireworks' for the fans in attendance as Western Mass decided to goon-it-up in the 85th minute. Evans promptly knocked the crap out of 'ole number thirteen; both players being ejected. After the game ended, the Steel Army kept the drums beating while the Hounds thanked the fans in attendance. It was good to get that first win at home.

Zach Varga, who made six saves to preserve the clean sheet, was named to the USL's Second Division Team of the Week along with defender Greg Janicki, who setup the Hound's first tally.

The Hounds are on their way to Richmond for a Saturday night match up. The club will be without Evans and Eddie Hayden as each serve one game bans. Newly signed Hounds' defender Cody Bragg will step into the backline. Ryan Zabinski earned a start on the wing opposite Jason Kutney with Travis MacKenzie dropping back into the midfield to replace Evans. Boyzzz Khumalo, Jerome and Leon Browne will split time at forward.

On top of it all, the Steel Army's own V-Money (Valerie) won the First Annual Riverhounds Chili Cook-off contest that was held before the Western Mass game. Her secret ingredient is rumored to have been imported from Argentina!

Intimidation: Ryan Caugherty

10 games played and a league leading 22 fouls committed. Ryan Caugherty, central defensive midfielder for the Riverhounds FC, has been terrorizing the opposition all season.

It’s been a strange transformation for a player who’s been an offensive force. In 2005, the Kansas City Wizards selected Ryan with the 47th pick in the MLS Supplemental draft, but he choose to play overseas. He signed with Boldklubben 1909, a Danish football club playing in the 2nd division. In front of the Odense supporters, he made an immediate impact taking Man of the Match in his first five starts. He ended the 2005 season with 11 goals in 31 games where he also spent time with Boldklubben 1913.

In 2006 he signed on with Swedish club Bodens BK and suffered a career-threatening ankle injury. After a remarkable recovery, he ended the season with 5 goals in only ten games.

So when a player of his caliber has no goals in 10 games you have to wonder what’s been going on. Out of need, he has taken on more of a defensive role with the Hounds this season.

He’s changed from an attacking player into a defensive beast. Running down loose balls, challenging forwards, distributing the ball from the back half of the pitch and shutting down the opposition’s passing lanes have become his forte. You can compare his game to that of New England’s stellar defensive midfielder Shalrie Joseph.

Ryan has been the ultimate team player this year for the Hounds; swapping goal-scoring glory for a hardhat and lunch pail. More importantly, he’s sending a painful message to the league’s forwards…

Caugherty has been tagged ‘The Korean Assassin’ by the Steel Army faithful.

Pro Honors: Boyzzz Khumalo

Thabiso "Boyzzz" Khumalo was named to the USL Second Division's Team of the Week for the second time this season. Boyzzz was instrumental in both games last weekend. He controlled the pace and pushed the attack, recording 5 shots against Charlotte as the Hounds tied the first place club, and then added a goal and assist versus Wilmington the next night.

Match Report: Hounds Tie First Place Eagles on the Road

It was an impressive performance by the Hounds. From the opening seconds the Hounds attacked the Eagles and created chances. The Hounds out-shot Charlotte 11-6 in the first half but couldn't put one in the back of the net. The Eagles were awarded a penalty kick when keeper Phil Marfuggi took out Robert Ssejjemba, who was coming in alone on a breakaway. Dustin Swineheart scored to give the Eagles the lead. Still, the Hounds could not be broken!

Nine minutes into the second half, Jason Kutney roofed a shot over the Charlotte keeper and into the upper corner of the net, tying the game at one. Then, in the 65th Pittsburgh took the lead when Jean-Robbins Jerome scored on a free kick from 30 yards out. Jerome bent it like Beckham, over the Eagles wall and into the net.

The rest of the game featured end to end action that saw the Eagles get the equalizer. All things considered, the Hounds played probably their best game of the season and attacked from start to finish.
